Just a curiosity of mine. However, if a snake eats f/t pinkies, but is too small for the pinky, I have heard of people chopping it up?

Do you do this when it's frozen or when it's thawed?

If you can feed mice in peices, what about fish, chicken, or beef? Raw of course.

Again, just curious. =)

My Garter eats pieces. Pinkies, fish. I slice them up while frozen. Then put in a ziplock bag and let set in hot tap water for about 10-15 minutes. He's on his last piece of cut fish right now.

I'll chop any food item up if its too big or I simply wish to draw out feeding for longer (with my monitor). As long as the entire thing is consumed it should be fine.

Besides garters I didn't know snakes ate meal parts. I definitely didn't think they'd eat beef or chicken parts. I think I remember a thead where someone fed their snake a chicken leg. I'll stick with whole mice, rats, and chicks :).

I've personally abstained from feeding red meats to my animals unless it includes bones. Red meats have 20 times the amount of phosphorus to calcium (Ca:P, twenty times more being 1:20) without bone, meaning they are severely detrimental to calcium sensitive animals or fed in excessive amounts to any animal, once again, without bones.

Additionally, I also agree. I don't know of many snakes, at least, that will eat parts in one sitting.

No doubt! I thought feeding parts was common practice. Not sure on the Ring's diet, but I rotate Pinkies, Fish, Worms, in my Garters diet. My small Garter will eat a whole small pinkie sliced up. I slice them up in 1/4" pieces or so and he comes in and takes off a part, and keeps coming back to the dish until all parts are gone.

I'll have to try that. My ring neck is definitely not large enough to tackle a pinkie all in one.

Snakes will take animals parts if offered. I don't feed parts on a regular basis, but some of my snakes have ate chicken wings and legs, strips of chicken breast and strips of fish.

If you feed them the HOT wings, you have to replace the water in their dish with beer. LOL Just kidding.

Is there a concern of salmonella when feeding raw chicken or is it cooked?

I have never had an issue with salmonella in the last 33 years. They eat their food raw in the wild. Snakes eat birds and eggs in the wild with no problems. My rat snakes love chicken wings and legs, but I only give it to them once in a while, because it is not complete nutrition for them. My False Water Cobra will eat almost anything you offer her.

When I have to tube feed a snake, my mixture of food is raw turkey, raw egg, water and reptile vit., turned into a baby food consistency. Have used that formula for 30 years and never had an issue and the snakes grow slow but healthy on it.
