Just moved to Tubs

So I was at Walmart and saw the Christmas tree Rubbermaids so I picked one up for my Boa because she needed a bigger cage and it was a cheap switch. Well I have a couple questions. First, heating. I use a UTH to heat my original cage, terrarium. With the Rubbermaid tub, should I put the UTH on the bottom outside the tub or inside? I'm not sure if it'll heat the same on the outside, or if it's safe on the inside (Yes, I have a thermostat).

Second, ventilation. I have drilled holes along the top, three on the short right and short left, and three spaced out along the long side. I was going to stick with this and see how the humidity came out, but while I'm here I might as well ask how many you'd put in.

The UTH should go on the outside of the tub. Which UTH are you using? I prefer ultratherms because they don't get as hot as some of the others. I think I put about 20 holes in my tub originally, and had to add more to get my humidity right, but I'm pretty sure my bull snake has lower humidity requirements than your boa.

It's actually heating tape, (6" Heat Tape (http://www.reptilebasics.com/heat-tape/6-heat-tape/)). I set it up on the outside, seems to be doing a good job of heating it! My humidity is a little high now with that many holes, so I'm going to put in a few more till I can find a nice medium for the humidity.

To lower the humidity, put the holes in the top of the lid and not the sides of the tub.

As said above, heat goes on the outside. As for how many holes it really depends on where you live. I'm in Ohio and I have about ten 3/8" holes on one side. I have to keep the Water on the cool side in the summer, then push it to the warm side in the winter. Just try different setups before you add more holes. You can always add more, but you can't fill them in without making it look tacky.

I use one of those Christmas tree tubs for my Red Tail Boa and I think it works great. I don't worry about the humidity to much either because the cypress mulch under the UTH dries out pretty quick but on the other side of the tub it stays pretty moist so she gets great humidity levels without having to lay on damp mulch all the time. I think the tubs work great just wish they were more aesthetically pleasing.
