View Full Version : Digital vs 35 mm
Taking pics of my snakes lately with my digital camera I have found that I have a greater variation with my 35mm film camera...what do others think
I like my digital better. My lense is better and I feel I have more control over what I get. Plus I can see the pics instantly instead of getting them developed and finding out that they didnt turn out. My digital has 3x optical zoom and 2.1 megapixels which takes great pics and can be printed up to 8x10 at high quality, and the advantage is if the pic doesnt turn out you can quickly take another pic in the same conditions and just trash the other one

For speed and versatility, nothing digital I've used beats my Olympus 35mm SLR.
My digital is a Nikon 990...older model now, I got it maybe a couple of years ago. It encourages experimentation because there's no film cost, and there's the instant gratification factor. At 3.3 megapixels I can make good prints up to 8X10. Resolution suffers in low light, and there's some limitation involved with lenses. I find an external flash set to bounce is usually necessary since the onboard in this model is next to useless.
I love them both, but use them for different things. The new generation digital cameras are excellent, but it's going to be a while yet before you get the same versatility and quality at comparable prices, IMO. I'm actually pricing medium format these days, but I won't be using that for herps much I think.

I have a minolta dimage 4 mega pixel and it takes stunning photos that I can look @ right away, and c if i need the lighting or anything better. With digital you can transfer your pics onto a computer.---Film has its place, but digital is rapidly filling it.
We get better control with our 35mm camera and a good lens, how ever our Sony mavica has 3.3 megapixal and takes better quality pics then needed for the web.

To me, nothing will ever replace the sensuality of a photograph taken on film by a truly talented photographer. Although it could just be that I have not yet experienced all there is to offer in digital technology b/c I can't afford it. I've pretty much given up on my 35mm because I take so many pictures, and I don't know how to do my own developing, that it's far more economical for me to use digital. I also love editing my pictures with photoshop. I also think Kodak (via ofoto.com sorry for the ad) does a really nice job printing out my pictures. I love the fact that I don't have to get doubles of pictures that *might* suck just to have doubles of the ones I know I'll need. I also find that my digital cam (2.2 megapixels) takes better pictures than my similarly priced 35mm did.
another thing I like about digital is that we get to see if we have the shot right away. I've taken tonnes of pics and with film you tend to bracket to make sure you get the shot. With digital you don't have to bracket as much. I've also found that my pics get better because i can correct for things such as light, exposure, posing, composition.
