View Full Version : Saffron ~ Tricolor Hognose, L. pulcher.
Imported all the way from the Czech Republic, she is het hypo erythristic. She's the same size Niska was when we got him, hard to believe he was ever that small! Pictures are terrible, just some quick snaps before leaving her to get settled in.
Looks like she might be starting to go blue.

Cool! Just don't see a lot of those around, let alone one that's Hypo-E. Love to see that gene expressed in some babies! Congrats on a nice addition.
Our male, Niska isn't het for anything but a local friend of ours bought a pair from the same Czech breeder and was kind enough to offer to have this one ride along with his import order from the Hamm show, which was great, as he took care of all the really annoying details involved with the importing! But that means that together we have 2.2 of them and three are het hypo erythristic. We have done breeding loans before with this friend and will likely do so with these guys down the road when they get big enough, that will give us some decent mix of bloodlines.

Always loved hogs, always loved tri-colored 'cause I love milks. Tri-color hogs are the best of both worlds to me. You get the lovely design of a milk snake and the cuteness of that face with the hognose, all in one snake!
I don't normally post feeding shots but here is Saffron attempting to eat her second washed pinky. She had been eating tuna scented for the breeder but has been taking washed F/T from me. Will probably try a regular F/T next time.
After she digests this meal, I need to get her out for a real photo shoot!

Sweet pics Charis!!!! What a little porker!!
Thanks! Very happy that she is eating well so far!
Finally did a real photo shoot with this girl, up until my camera died, anyway. Just as I was getting warmed up too! Oh, well, got a few good ones.

Best one of the lot. Camera died a second after taking this one, was so happy it did finish getting this shot, I couldn't tell right off if it had or not.

Seeing these photos makes me wish I wouldn't have sold my tri colored hog nose, Hagrid, as huffy as he was.
Wow, very nice Charis! Put me down for a hatchling from your first clutch!!
Me too. Absolutely beautiful!!

Awesome Tricolor! I'm hoping to get one some day. Gorgeous animals. What's their care like? I've searched around some and most articles are pretty old so I'm not sure how up to date their info is.
Yeah, unfortunately pretty much all the care info on them is old and that's what we've followed with these guys. They seem to be doing well, cared for that way though.
Hot spot around 86-90 and coco husk/sphagnum moss for substrate and the humidity fairly high, 50-70% generally. They are borrowers and spend most of their time buried in the substrate. I'd definitely say this species should be given a particle substrate that they can borrow in.

I've been looking for someone selling tricolors in the states for almost a year now, do you know of any?

Very cool. I haven't come across one of these guys yet. Hogs are the cutest snakes out there.. supercondas top them though- id imagine yours is close to the same price though?
These guys aren't super expensive, just very hard to find. The typical price, if you can find one, is between $200-$300 but last year someone was selling some around $400-$450, which is the highest I've ever seen them. Saffron was actually a very good price, altogether only $225 even with import shipping and domestic shipping, though on the domestic side she was part of a friend's shipment and we only paid a small part of the shipping on that leg, which helped a lot. So even though she came all the way from the Czech Republic, she was actually $25 less than the male we bought domestically in 2012.

I wonder if anyone is breeding these in the U.S.? They are spectacular, I saw them many years ago on kingsnake classifieds.
There's a few people but not many!

Hopefully Charis will :) Black Pearl has them also. They reproduce quite a lot which is why commercial breeders don't keep them for long. When reproducing a lot the market gets flooded and then they sell the breeders off, eventually a bust cycle happens and few can be found so people get them and another boom cycle happens or at least that's what a breeder who was selling off his adults told me... but then you look at corn snakes which there are always too many of and people keep breeding them anyway so I don't get it!
Taken outdoors 4/21/15.
Was having a really hard time getting the camera to focus right little worried our camera is getting glitchy.

What surface is she on?
In the latest pictures? It's a ceramic bowl that we were given as a wedding gift when my husband and I married. I use it a lot to take pictures of the reptiles in. It's about the size of a typical dinner plate for some idea of scale.

Right on, the color made it look like discolored or corroded metal which is why I asked. I would probably use it for snake pictures too. :)
