Cape wolf snake

Hello everyone,
I recently found these little guys online and am slightly obsessed. There is not a lot of information on them especially in the captivity department. I was wondering if anyone on here has any experience or information they could share with me. They feed on lizards and I was curious about the logistics of this. First are feeder lizards readily available? Second cape wolf snakes are pretty small (max at 2 feet) so is there variable sizes of lizard feeders? And lastly does the species of lizard matter?

You can get feeder anoles online, species of the lizard isn't critical but size may be an issue if you have a very small snake. An 18-24" snake shouldn't have too much trouble with an average size anole, they're more slender than rodents. Might be able to switch them over to mice by scenting them with lizards.

From what I've read about the cape wolf snake, they are best suited to an advanced herper, so keep that in mind. I don't know your experience level, but it is something I would consider.

I actually found a local store that sells feeder anoles for about the same price you can get online. I have read a lot about scenting mice and I will definitely be attempting to accomplish this but I am also committed to lizards if this does not take. I have done quite a bit of research and I am not sure they do need a advanced keeper. Firstly they are known to be very docile even in the wild. Also they inhabitant many different habitats in Africa meaning they seem to be quite hardy. They are quite small by snake standards. The only reason I could think of that would be difficult is the fact that they eat lizards and I have taken care of this. Maybe I am missing something that you know more about?

Sounds like you know more than me! I thought it was a neat snake but didn't do much research after I read 'recommended for experienced snake owners' as I am not experienced lol

It could be that they don't settle well into captivity, any chance of finding a cb young one?

Just curious on why you've decided on such an obscure snake? I had to google it to see what you were talking about. Nothing wrong with that, but what is it about them that you like? I'm all for people keeping whatever they want, but usually if someone opts for something that's rare, or difficult to feed, then it's because that species stands out in some way. I'M not seeing anything particularly noteworthy about this species. Just wondered what it is you like. I don't know anything about them. And again, I'm all for it, especially if you can find some that are captive bred (or if you intend to become the worlds leading supplier of captive bred cape wolf snakes ;) ).

As it is not that common I don't think the chances of finding a captive bred is very likely. The one importer I have found says they do well in captivity but who knows. I know there are more striking snakes but for some reason I really like their splotching and the way their faces look. I also like that they are not commonly kept and are something of an oddity. I already own a corn snake so I have the pretty snake part covered.

Lol I totally get wanting that 'uncommon' factor! I kind want a ringneck for that reason, but mostly, I just want some more pretty snakes. Like neon blue red sided garters, or a hognose, and possibly a lucistic rat snake.

Well just an update for everyone who responded. After putting a bunch of time and energy into preparing for the wolf snake I unfortunately had to pull the plug. I tried to contact the importer several times but they did not have the courtesy to respond. To me this says they do not respect their customers which made me question the quality of their animals. After doing some searching I was unable to find another source so the dream is over for now. Maybe it was for the best. Now I get to pick another snake to add to my home.
