new IJ carpet python, bedding question

Hello, new to the forum. I had a coastal carpet python as a teenager and unfortunately put him outside in an empty rabbit hutch in the spring time and he escaped. He was an awesome snake and I've always wanted another but have only seen them a few times in stores.

Well, the local pet store had a carpet python today, a real sweetie and very docile. My husband bought him for me. The guy at the pet store said he breeds carpet pythons and believes it is a male irian jaya mixed with coastal, I am not sure why he thinks this but I think it might just be an ij because the snake is supposedly 3 years old and only around 4 feet.

I bought him a setup and some coco husk bedding, the brick kind you soak in water. I have read mixed things about this bedding, I may switch to something else. My question is, after soaking the brick the bedding is very wet. I am worried about it causing an infection. Will it dry out adequately on its own?

I've never used that for bedding, but what sort of enclosure is it in? I use newspaper in my enclosures, with a bowl of damp long-fiber sphagnum moss to boost and maintain humidity.

i use old newspapers in all my Carpet enclosures

not all carpets with Coastal blood in them grow large mate

As Shaun already mentioned, size is variable among the subspecies, so that's not something we can go off of to guess whether your carpet python is pure IJ. There are many big IJ's as well.

When I use cocohusk in the brick form, I expand it in warm water and leave it out to dry before putting it in an enclosure. I've found it to mold when really wet for long periods of time.

how long does it take to dry? i can take it out of his tank and put it in a bowl and use paper towels in the mean time. I don't know how long he is, I haven't measured him yet, but here's a pic:

Upon closer observation he is probably around 3'. Haven't measured him yet. The employee at the pet store said the guy who brought him in said he was 3 years old by the employee didn't think he could be that old because of how small he is.

Looks too small for a three year old, no matter the subspecies. On average, carpets will get that big by their first year or a few months after.

You can't tell what a carpet is just by looking at it. It definitely has IJ influence, but it could be a cross for all we know... I can also "see" coastal inflence in there as well. We would need lineage information to be sure.
