View Full Version : Tubs & Humidity

I set my snow bull snake Apollo up in a tub exactly two months ago. I thought everything was fine. After reading recently on the forum about how tubs retain humidity I decided to invest in a digital hygrometer and I'm glad I did. The humidity in the tub was reading 80%. The humidity in the house was only 55%. I drilled several more holes in the tub but it was still the same this morning. Is there anything else I can do to bring the humidity in the tub down? I've got two rows of 7 holes on each side of the tub and at least ten small holes in the top. Will the prolonged exposure to such high humidity harm my snake? The care sheets call for 40-50% humidity. He's fairly active, eats well, has had 2 perfect sheds and is growing well. My three other snakes are in tanks and their humidity was in the 50-60% range. Any tips or advice?

The humidity in Ammits tank stays pretty high for me(70-80%) so I run a fan towards her enclosure and it puts it towards 40-50%

When I run any kind of fan in my room, immediately dries out my BRB's tub. I could have sprayed it down that morning and it would dry it out. Just an idea.

I think a small fan blowing on one side would help. Or just order new AP t10 or t13's! :p:D

Great idea Steve! I was going to order a T-10 for She-Ra in January when I get my EOY bonus :). I just bought a small freezer to store the feeders and I know my girl would flip if I dropped another $250 on the T-10 right now for a snake I wasn't even supposed to get. I better try the fan idea for now :).

More holes in the top will lower the humidity.

Copy that Jerry. I'll add more holes tonight. Will the higher humidity cause any harm if all the other husbandry variables are dialed in? I haven't seen any signs of an RI or other illness but I don't want to reach that point. I'm just wondering if I need to get him out of this tub and into a different enclosure ASAP. I know lots of people use tubs though so I can't imagine he's in any imminent danger.

I use tubs and have never had any issues. If the humidity is to high I just add more holes to the top until the humidity is correct. i wouldn't worry about the snake getting sick, remember in the wild they have many variables in their environment and they survive just fine. We tend to worry to much.
