View Full Version : Best Display Snake
I have my Garter and King in my office right now but they are about to go home with me. I was thinking about putting one in my lobby for my customers to see when they come in.
In y'alls option what is the best display snake? Color, doesn't mind/likes to be handled. I'm sure my customers will want to get him out. I would prefer to go with a substrate besides Aspen so they are not borrowed and can be seen easier.

I have always thought the green tree pythons look really cool, from the pics I have seen it seems they are right at home just hanging on a stick in the enclosure. Not sure if they like to hide a lot or not? Might be fun to research them a bit and see if one would work out for you!

What do you do? The snake in the lobby might freak some people out which could result in you losing customers.
I love the Green Trees. I haven't stepped up to the boas or pythons yet. Just now starting to research them. Lots to learn about them.

It's not retail. More construction based business. The owner is scared to death of snakes, but loves to come check out my Garter and King. There is a 0% chance of losing a customer from having a snake in the lobby.

A north american rat snake would make a great display snake. My grey rat snake is quite interesting as he's active during the day and always climbing around.

I'm with you, or a nice Burm. I guess that's what the guys who like the giants always think of first. But we are all snake lovers, what does the average person who doesn't keep snakes think? Do they necessarily care what kind of snake is being displayed? I know we all would.

They don't. That's why I also asked about substrate. My Cal King borrows a lot, was thinking something on a Bark? But want him to be happy with hides, but easy to find.

It's not amazing, but he seems to enjoy it. It's important to note that they can get 4-7 feet and will utilize a large cage. My guy is only in a 20 gallon at the moment, but I'm looking into getting something in the range of 4'x3'x3' in the future.
Nice! He blends in beautifully!

I've always wanted to do a cool Bioactive setup with a rough green snake.
The drymarchon are active. :D

Something diurnal mate and a colubrid would be your best bet for a display snake in the office.

LOL yeah that's always my first thought being a giant lover, but seriously if were talking a display snake you cant beat a big retic or burm, big snakes always fascinate most people and its a big attention grabber. If no room for something that big i think ETB's or GTP's make awesome display animals.

I think a bull or gopher snake would fit the bill as well.
Something in the colubrid family for sure. Generally diurnal, active, don't require as specific of husbandry. I love beauty snakes for this reason but they can get quite large for a rat snake, 8-10'. Probably a North American species as mentioned already. They fit the bill, don't cost much, and they can even educate people about local wildlife.

If you don't want another garter (and why NOT, they are great display snakes!) then yeah, maybe a rat snake.
Something that likes to prowl during the day, I'd think.

Snakes are not happy is sad they have no emotions they live by instinct alone
If you meet the needs they thrive if you don't they don't
What I consider in choosing a display animal is how nervous the snake is right now I have a Mojave rattler than feeds and has never shown any signs of beeing

Very nice and colorful garter Wrecker.
My Cal King is always active, and being a desert phase the striking black / white is very pleasing to the eye.

The best display snakes i have ever owned (besides retics), were beauty rat snakes by far. Always climbing around, hanging out on branches. Very curious and watch anything that walks by, and they look very nice as well.

I have a Albino Cal King. She stays borrowed all the time. She in my office so I keep an eye on her for about 8-9 hours a day. She only comes out once or twice a day and just for a couple minutes.

i would go for something that was a bit more hardy and easier to keep than a GTP.....
i would go for a carpet python...
easy to keep, hardy species, great feeding responses
they come in all sorts of colours and patterns
a calm carpet will be ok getting handled
a 4x2x2ft vivarium will do most carpets their whole lives (20 to 30 years)
cheers shaun

I like the Carpets. Read a lot of mix reviews about their temperament. But that goes with an species of snake...I have read a lot of Carpets being on the next snake list.

I don't keep one YET but what's not to love? They're sleek and gorgeous. I was a little intimidated by the husbandry requirements at first but I know I can handle that now. Can't wait!

Very easily kept, awesome attitudes, they're always happy to eat. Gorgeous colors even in the wildtypes (have you SEEN a nice Jungle or Diamond?!)

I have not.
Got a link to the best care sheet and or breeder(s) for the Carpets?

Carpets are a hit and miss as a display snake... sure most of them are pretty but they are a nocturnal python by nature and are most active early in the evening.
You may get lucky and have one that will happily sit in the open during the daylight hours (won't be moving much) or one that spends the daylight in a hide and only coming out at dusk.
Husbandry wise they are a very easy snake to care for.....
It depends on your idea of a "display", display as seen "look there's a snake in that cage (not moving but in full view)" or display as in "hey there's a snake in that tank all active and moving" in full view during daylight hours.
In regards to seeing nice jungles...

Simple caresheet:
Temps: ambient temps in the low 80's, basking spot in the high 80's to 90F can be provided.
Humidity: negligent. Moderate humidity is fine(40-60%). If you use a heat lamp you may need to mist at times since lamps dry the air out. You shouldn't have a problem with heat mats or radiant heat panels.
cage size: 3x2 or 4x2 of floorspace should be the minimum for adults. Bigger is better.
For more in-depth look into care, i suggest getting the book "The Complete Carpet Python" by Justin Julander and Nick Mutton. You can buy it online at amazon or their websites(Inlandreptile.com and australianaddictionreptiles.com)
Breeders in the US:
-Nick Mutton
-Justin Julander
-Will Bird
-Derek Roddy
-Erik Koller
-Terry Philip
-Kerry King
-Matt Lacoss
-Howard Redding
-Ed Lilley
-Micheal Miller
You can find all these breeders and many more on facebook, Kingsnake, and faunaclassifieds.

I've bought from Kerry King (yes THAT Kerry King of Slayer...), Terry Phillip, and Nick Mutton. All are great guys and I would have no problem buying from them again.

Something that likes to prowl during the day, I'd think.
I decided to take a couple weeks and watch mine before making a decision. My Garter never stops. Lights on and he is on the move. Fast sucker too! I've almost pulled the trigger on a Garter/Milk/Hognose, but have yet to. It's a tough decision.

Honestly, one of the coolest (non-venomous) display snakes I ever owned was a big tiger rat snake (Spilotes pullatus). She was huge- 7 or 8 feet long, very brightly patterned, incredibly alert and FAST.
They are an arboreal species and are very curious. They have large, forward-set eyes so they wave their heads back and forth to get depth perception. Watching them triangulate on something is impressive and one of the coolest things I've seen a snake do! They need a big cage, and like to climb, so you can go crazy with decorations.
But, I really think you can't beat a nice rainforest setup with a couple of bright eyelash vipers. They do well in groups, and the rainbow of colors they come in really catches the eye.

I did not read all the replies here but a Brazilian rainbow boa to me is the most beautiful normal phase out there. They stay at a decent size. Mine is very active just a stunning animal.
