So my snake (a baby spotted python) shed for the first time in my care about 3-4 weeks ago. I know the babies shed a lot so I figure he was due to shed sometime soon. Today I found about an inch long piece of shed from the tail of the snake, but could not find any other shed pieces. Is this normal? His last shed was 1 clean piece. Any ideas?

If you're using substrate like Aspen or Sani-Chips, it's possible that the remainder of the shed is buried in the substrate. When they're small, they often burrow into the substrate to facilitate the shedding process. Try combing your fingers through the substrate and see if you find the remainder of the shed.

This. I woke up this morning to a shed buried in substrate.

I removed all his hides and look through the cage and still couldn't find a shed. The bedding being used is cypress (don't worry, not cypress mulch. Purchased from a great local reptile vendor), and it doesn't appear to have any burrows in it. I combed the top 1/2" of it and found nothing either way. I took my snake out and held him too and his eyes are very clear so at least it looks like he had a successful shed, even if it was a Houdini-esque ordeal :P
