I have a 10gal tank. Looking for a snake that is perfect for a 10 and won't out grow it.

If they're legal for you to keep in Texas, I think a Ring Necked ground snake would fit nicely in a ten gallon tank. They only reach about 15 inches as adults and since they eat earthworms and slugs, you would be able to maintain a good diet for it fairly easily. I found a beautiful little hatchling last week that was charcoal black with a lovely pale yellow ring. Very nice little snakes.

Male sand boas would be fine in a ten gallon.

I'd go with a hognose or sand boa.

I really like the color of the California Red-sided Gartersnakes

Male African House snake, male Sand boa, male desert or mountain Rosy boa, (the Coastal Rosy boas are larger) male Western Hognose, male Tricolor hognose or Rubber boas. Plus several of any of the smaller garter species, males are also smaller in garters.
All of these species, the males tend to be much smaller than the females.

Would a male African house snake be ok in a ten gallon for life? I was under the impression that they grew around three feet?

My male Garter is awesome! Valley Garter. Just to switch up his diet I bought some Silversides at Petsmart today. He gobbled it up! I think he will eat just about anything.

Not to bump an old thread, but I am getting a 10gal free tank tomorrow. I'm going to look into the Boas.

I'm quite partial to a male rosy boa.

For a nice snake to handle I'd suggest a hognose. Garters tend to be a bit fast and always want to escape lol. If you don't mind that though, then male garters are AWESOME as they are pretty (to me anyway) and relatively cheap compared to hognoses depending on what you're into. I personally have both a male garter and a hognose on my wish list lol.

I will also suggest a garter. They make great pets. They're beautiful snakes, have great personalities, and are really curious little snakes. I like hoggies as well. And ringnecks can have a hard time adjusting to captivity and often hide a lot. But they are pretty and very cool little snakes. The one we have at my work is awesome. If you can get one that's okay with being in captivity they make really cool pets.
