I've heard of people using acrylic, plexi or just glass to turn a regular tank into a front opener. Does anybody have experience with this?

Put it on it's side and put in tracks and sliding glass where the "top" is. Plexiglass and acrylic can be drilled for ventilation. For a glass tank, you'll have to use diamond tipped bits and a high speed drill. That or make a frame which has a smaller sliding glass door with screen/holes on either side.
Yeah cosmic- it's pretty easy. The fishtanks all have a plastic lip. You can cut 1x to fit snuggly in there and silicone it in place. Once you have the 1x frame you are able to just slap hinges on and put doors on. The best way to get acrylic doors is to route a channel into a Harwood 1x (like oak.) The easiest would be to use two seperate pieces of wood to house the acrylic.
