Treating Mites Question

So I bought a new female BP the other day and she has mites. I went to the pet store today and got some rats and Mite Off. I am going to see if she will go ahead and eat tonight and start treating her Wednesday, if she does, if not I will start in the morning. I plan to soak her and clean her enclosure and then spray her down with the Mite Off. My question is should I use the betadine "weak tea" to soak her in or not? I've heard lots of people say it is good but I've heard also that it can cause serious health problems, especially if they drink any of it. So I'm asking for your opinions and experiences.

Try this, it'll work.

Buy a "hot shot" flea strip from Walmart --

Walmart: Hot Shot: Kills Flying & Crawling Insects No-Pest Strip 2, 2.29 Oz (http://mobile.walmart.com/ip/12166874?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=14&adid=22222222228000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=m&wl3=42423897272&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=18283950120&veh=sem)

Take the pest strip out of the cartridge and cut a square about 1.5" x 1.5", and put it in a small deli cup. Cut aeration holes in the top of the lid and place it into your snake's enclosure.

The mites should all be dead within 24 hours.

I've used prevent a mite (PAM). That seems to do the trick and there are no ill effects.

Use as directed. This will last inside your enclosure for over 30 days even if the enclosure is cleaned.

If you want to quicken the process you can do a NIX treatment as well. I have used these with 100% success.

Don't get me wrong thanks for the advice, but I already know all about Provent-A-Mite and I am ordering some at the beginning of the month, but then it will still be a week before I get it. I have no experience with "TEA", I only use proven treatments. I have used NIX for years, its fast, effective and easy to get.

Spray the enclosure down, spray the snake down and repeat in a 7-10 days repeat again in another 7-10 days. Mites dead. :)

You can get NIX at a large number of places. I would use that before Mite Off, Mite Off is pretty much worthless. PAM or Reptile Spray from Reptile Basics is what I use. Never had an issue with either. Betadine is more for infections as it's an anti-bacterial agent similar to Iodine (which is actually the active ingredient). Not sure if it would really work on mites.

Thanks for the advice on the NIX, I might make a run to the CVS right down the street and see if they got it. Wish I would have knew about it before I shelled out the 10 bucks for the Mite Off. I just soaked both of them for about 2 hours, the big one that I know had mites when I bought her was soaking herself in her water bowl for atleast 4 hours before hand too. While I was soaking them I sprayed the enclosures with Mite Off then once it aired out and they dried off I sprayed them. I haven't seen any mites on my little one that I got first yet but I know its possible they have spread to her as well so I treated them both.

Should I wait a few days before I try to use NIX on them? I know the Mite Off says to wait 3 days before treating again. The NIX is poison right? It won't hurt them?

ive seen people kill snakes using those fly strips mate

Like Shaun said, I don't trust those strips, it even says on the box not to use around animals. Not worth the risk IMO.

I would give it a day before using the NIX. You're just looking for Permethrine as the active ingredient. All of these chemicals are some poison, but as long as the animal doesn't drink it you should be fine.

All I could find is the NIX spray and a generic brand Permethrin spray that both says not for use on humans, and I assume that means animals too, for furniture and non-washables only.

I normally get mine at the local drug store and its over the counter, you have to ask the pharmacist for it.

Actually the mite off seems to have done the trick. I got her out today and handled her for 1-2 hours and saw no sign of any mites, use to just picking her and got mites on me. Then I put her in a white pillow slip for 1-2 hours and still no sign of mites. I will probably treat her, both of them actually, even though I only saw mites on the one and she was like that when I got her, and the enclosures again after their next feed to make sure none did survive or no new eggs hatched but I'm pretty happy with the job the Mite Off did.

Anyone ever planning to use the strips, they work really well on the adults (does not kill eggs) So you have to repeat it according to the mite life cycle. However, Remove All water sources! It does not harm your reptiles, unless they ingest it. It affects water, so if you use the strips remove any water-bowls etc.
