what size tank to use?

Is it more important to have more floor space or a longer length for the snake to stretch out. I have a corn snake who use to be in a 40gallon breeder, but is now in a 55 gallons tank. The 40 gallon breeder isn't as long as the 55 gallon, but it is deeper and has an over all larger floor space. However, the 55 gallon is about a foot longer, but it about 6 inches shorter in depth and has an overall smaller floor space. So is it more important to have a larger overall floor space or to have a longer cage for him to stretch out in?

Between those 2 I would say the 40 gallon. 12" is extremely narrow for a full grown corn snake.

I would think that too, but the recommended minimum size for a corn snake is a 20gallon long which has a 12" depth. I do think that a 20gallon is an absolutely ridiculous size for a full grown corn snake. I wishI could give him a 75gallon tank for him, but I can't afford it and I don't have the room.

I think most recommended minimum sizes are absolute rubbish given by people who want to justify their small enclosures. "My snakes are still alive so what's the big deal?"

Anyways I agree the 40 gallon is the better of the two sizes.

Floor space is almost the exact same on both. The 40 is just shorter and wider, but square feet/inches is close to identical. The biggest downside to 55 gallon enclosures is their shape is a pain in the butt to arrange enclosure furniture and decor. But it can be done. I have many 55's and they work well.
