View Full Version : Loki, my Eastern Indigo

After nearly 30 years of wishing, he has arrived! He was ready for pick up at the airport around 8:30 this morning. I work until 3:00pm, but I couldn't stand it, so I took a long lunch and rushed over to get him and drop him off at my house. I love him already. He's in blue, but he's still a striking little fellow. He's actually a 2013 hatchling. I would have expected him to be a bit longer, but he's much thicker than other colubrids of his size. As soon as he settles in, I'll start feeding and putting some length on him. Anyway, I'm very pleased with the little guy. Can't wait til he's settled in.

A few crappy cell phone photos until I'm able to get the camera out.

The obligatory box opening photo:

Yeah, 30 years is a long time. I've wanted one since I first read about them in a reptile book from my school library. I think I was in the 3rd grade. I'm 37 now, so whatever that works out to be.

Here's a little video of him coming out of the box. Nothing too exciting but I couldn't be happier.

Sorry about the vertical orientation of the video. My 9 year old daughter was filming. But, in her defense, that is how I handed her my phone.

Right now, he's going to live in a 20gal long tank that is blacked out on three sides. As soon as he outgrows that, I have a custom enclosure that is 36"L X 18"W that he'll probably live in for a while. When he's closer to adult size, I'm planning to build him a nice wooden enclosure with sliding glass doors on front. Probably somewhere around 8'L X 2' W X 3'H. I'm hoping to make it a bioactive, natural setup, but I need some experience with this snake before I decide if that will work.

That sounds awesome! I think you should just go for the bioactive substrate- especially in a beautiful enclosure that big. It's not a matter of if bioactive substrate will work its more a matter of what type of bioactive substrate will work and how to make it. No snake lives on paper towels and fine aspen shavings in the wild lol. Again congrats on the indigo- I have been reading on them, cool snakes man. Start keeping an eye out for shower doors- the best quality free glass a snake - cage maker can get.

I'm definitely leaning that way. When I step him up to his mid-sized enclosure, I might go ahead and go bioactive with it and get some practice with what works.

And just an update on him:

He seems to be doing well. As I mentioned, he was in blue when he arrived. The breeder said he needed to eat soon, so I offered him a meal the day after I got him, just to see if he'd eat. The only thing I had in the freezer small enough for him was pinkies that my daughter is feeding to her young corn snake. He ate two of those despite being in deep blue. I left him alone for a couple of days, and in the meantime, stopped by the local pet store and picked up some hoppers for him. Yesterday I noticed he's finally out of the blue phase, so I offered him a hopper, which he took down like a champ. So, he ate twice in the first four days I had him. He should shed within the next couple of days. I'm anxious to see his true colors.

Me either. :D

Depends on where you live. But, for all states, you need a federal interstate commerce permit, unless you're buying from within the state. And, if you live in a state where they're indigenous, as I do, then extra state permits will be required, which may be very difficult, or impossible to obtain. Depends on which of the indigenous states you live in.

aaron_cg

Texas. So, my guess is it is the same process for the canebrake, however, with this one I could buy instate?

Unless Texas has any specific laws, which I doubt, you can buy one from within your state with no permit at all. If you can find one.

Thanks guys. He's still doing ok, but ever since I got him out for that last photo, he's been a little shy about eating. He seems intimidated when I dangle his food in there, and has refused to eat it. I've started just placing it under his hide, and he has been eating it within a few minutes. Just going to leave him alone for a while and see if he settles back in.

He's doing great. He's really started to grow lately. I need to get a few updated photos as soon as he sheds. He's opaque right now. I upgraded him to a larger enclosure yesterday. He could have stayed in the 20g long that he was in for a while longer, but my daughter needed it for her gerbils, so I went ahead and cleaned up his mid-sized enclosure and put him in it. It's 36x18". I think he'll stay in that until I build his adult home.

I don't know where you live, so I don't know if it's legalities or the cost that's holding you back. But, either way, you might look into the cribos. I want a couple of every drymarchon species. ;) They're all cool.

Cribos are nice but they're not Indigos which are a protected species here in GA. The Indigos are a bit costly too but worth it.

At the moment, I'm birdless. I'll pick back up next fall. I usually fly red tailed hawks. Most falcons aren't really cut out for the game and terrain we have in alabama.

No, I said "pick back up", meaning I'll get a new hawk, and restart my falconry. This particular season started off poorly (had a hawk die from complications with a broken leg), and didn't get much better, so I'm taking a short break. As far as what I hunt, with the red tails, I hunt rabbits and squirrels. Other birds can be used to hunt various other things (mostly birds) but the majority of falconers in the southeast focus on rabbits and squirrels, and that's my preference as well.

He just switched from mice to rat pups. He generally eats one every two days, except around shedding time. He gets finicky then. I've experimented with feeding him two items every three or four days, but he seems to eat best on the one item every two or three day schedule.

How's his activity level? Is he on the move or stay hidden?

He spends most of his time in his flower pot, with his head stuck out the opening. But, when he starts to get hungry, he's out cruising his cage a lot more. I feed him constantly though, because he came to me pretty small for his age. I've been trying to ensure he'll make it to full indigo size. So, he rarely has a chance to really get hungry before I stick more food in his face. I expect him to be a lot more active once he goes on his "adult rations". But even now, it's easy to see that he's a diurnal snake.

so, eminart.....i didn't read the entire thread, but i have a question...is the poo really as bad as i've read about?

years ago, i had a BTC, that was a prolific poo-er. i was in like 6th or 7th grade at the time. it was an import, and was heavily parasitized. the vet care back then was very "limited" at best. dosing this guy w anti-helminthics was a best-guess scenario. poor thing ended up dying about 6 weeks after i got him from local pet store (this was back in the late 70's btw)...

anyway, i never really knew if his poo issues were parasite related (i'm sure to a degree?) or also just part of the Drymarchon metabolism that you read about....

just wondering. thanks for any info...

It's really not that bad, it just comes a lot more often than it does with other snakes. Right now, Loki is eating a weanling rat every 3 days. Three days after I feed him, like clockwork, he comes out in the afternoon/early evening, poops, and expects another meal. I know when it's coming, so it gets cleaned up quickly.

Also, most people keep them on newspaper. I think that probably adds to the messiness, as they cruise around and smear poop everywhere. I use sanichips. There's very little mess. Just scoop out the area and it's good to go.

But, so far, I've fed him 95% rodents. I've heard the poop is worse with some other things (fish, snakes, frogs, etc). I really do want to vary his diet more, so that might affect things a bit. I'm working on a plan to get some fish, snakes, and maybe some frog legs and lizards to feed him.

The internal parasites in your BTC's probably had a lot to do with their smelly poop. Any time one of my hawks has a load of worms, the poop gets pretty rank.

I thought about getting a pair of BTC's to breed as well. I think they're awesome-looking snakes. And they're not nearly as costly as indigos, so buying two is a bit more feasible. My thing is just that these snakes require fairly large enclosures, and I don't have much room. Oh, and a lot of food. I'm going to have to get a second job to feed Loki. ;)

LOL. I take about 100 shots and throw away the 99 where he didn't cooperate.

With the last photo I posted, I put his hide down and put him in it. I got ready and mostly focused, then had my daughter lift the hide off. That particular time, he sat still long enough to get several photos.

But, generally, it's the shotgun approach.

I started building Loki's adult enclosure. Plans are for it to be full bioactive. Inside dimensions are 6'x2'x33.5". Several inches of the depth will be substrate. I have to wait a bit now to buy the epoxy sealer for the inside and and the glass doors. I'm also waiting to install the top and some trim until I've settled on exactly how I'm going to heat and light it. So, it's a long way from finished, but I'm mostly just waiting on money.

Anyway, I just had Loki out and thought I'd see how well he fits into it. He still has plenty of room to grow.

I have always wanted an Indigo man. When I was 13 I caught one by smoking it out of a hollow tree (I would never do this now but I was a kid desperate to capture this particular snake). My friends mother was picking us up from his grandfathers ranch, 5 hours or so from where I lived. She flat refused to allow the snake into her vehicle and I was forced to release the snake I had worked so hard to capture! I still haven't ever seen another one in the wild, so I'll break down and buy one eventually.

Males can reach 8.5 feet. I think 7-8 feet is average for a male.

As far as being different, they eat a lot more often and just a lot more in general. They aren't ambush predators like many snakes. They're diurnal and actively hunt their food. So, they have a very high metabolism. They also can't unhinge their jaws like most snakes, which means they generally eat smaller prey items, but more of them. They're opportunistic feeders and will eat, literally, ANYTHING they can overpower. But, in the wild, other snakes are a very large part of their diet, which is likely the reason they can't unhinge their jaws - snakes are easy to swallow. But, they'll eat rodents, fish, frogs, lizards, small turtles, eggs, birds, snakes, and even carrion sometimes. One indigo was found eating meat off of a dead shark head on a beach.

I feed my boy about every 3 days. He gets finicky about food around shedding time, which is once a month right now, but otherwise, he pretty much always eats. The past couple of days, he refused a frog leg, but I don't think he recognizes the smell as food yet. He did eat one in the past though.

So, anyway, with all that food going in, there's plenty coming out the other end. And, it tends to be on the runny and nasty side. They're very active, as I said, which means they're out crawling around a lot after every one of those poops, and they can make quite a mess. I've found that sanichips cut down on this for me, but most people use newspaper. I can only imagine how they must smear the poop around on that. Eeeesh.

Anyway, that's what I meant when I said they were different.

You can see his feeding record here: iHerp : Online Reptile Software, Husbandry, Community, Tracking, Breeding, Snakes, and More! (http://iherp.com/HerpTrack/Tracking/Default.aspx?AnimalID=156864) As you can see, they can put away some food. One guy on my drymarchon FB group just posted that in the past two weeks, his female has eaten 15 mice, 1 small rat, and 2 medium quail.

EL Ziggy
06-20-15, 07:13 PM
Wow Em, that's a pretty active feeding schedule. I feel for you brother. That's as many prey items as my 4 snakes eat in 2 week$. :)

Sylphie
06-21-15, 03:24 AM
Wow, they are bigger "feeding machines" than Russians... My Russian would eat antyhing too, but only once in a week (I know that she'll be happy to eat more often, but in their case it will be overfeeding). And it's really interesting that they can eat turtles and fish too.

And yeah, I can imagine the mess that they can create... but still what is not done out of love? :D

And like EL-Ziggy, I feel for you, that's a lot of eaten money, haha! :D

Yes, it's bioactive. I'd also love to see one in the wild. I was actually supposed to go down this past february and tag along and help with survey in the Conecuh National Forest in southern AL, where they've been reintroduced. But, the weather was bad that weekend, and it's a pretty long drive for me, so I opted out. They did find one of the tagged snakes, but just the one. I may try to go on the next one.

But yeah, looking a man in the face, might be a bit of a stretch. But, I'm sure an 8+ footer in the wild would be pretty impressive, nonetheless.

I haven't fed him any birds yet, but I have quail and starlings in the freezer for him. The quail are a bit big for him at this point, and I was waiting for the starlings to be frozen for at least a month, to help kill off parasites. They should be ready now though. They're basically like a king cobra that doesn't bite. Mine was a little shy when he was small. He still huffs sometimes when I pick him up, or if he's generally displeased or excited about something. He spends most of his time in his burrow, but often has his head or up to half his body out, watching. He seems to spend more and more time out cruising, or just basking, the older he gets.

Thanks, Albert! Yes, I've thought about getting a female to breed. Space and money are holding me back. That, and finding an unrelated mate in the tiny captive gene pool.

I've seen some that have a lot more red than Loki. I think the ones I saw were from European breeders. Personally, I like wild-type red phase, or the "blacks" most.

Someone in the states was advertising the red head eastern indigos on fauna class. Yeah I know you are space limited and so am i. I am going to double check that ad and make sure fauna is where I saw it.

As I stated in another thread, we just bought a new house and moved. I have my own reptile room, which is just a spare bedroom upstairs. However, after measuring and thinking about weight in an upstairs bedroom, I decided (with my wonderful wife's approval) to put Loki's enclosure downstairs in the living room. I was afraid the weight of it would cause problems upstairs, plus, it would have been nearly impossible to get up the stairs.

But, anyway, it's all set up now, and somewhat improved, I think, with the addition of the piece of driftwood. The entrance to Loki's lair is a bit more hidden now by some pants and rocks. But, it still leads to the tub in the cabinet below.

I'll post photos of my reptile room, if I ever finish getting it set up.

His enclosure looks awesome! I can't wait to get my indigo next Saturday. I'm getting a Texas Indigo, but hope to get an Eastern someday. The guy I'm getting it from breeds Easterns as well so I'll talk to him about the permit and legalities.

Thanks. Yes, it's all real. I'm still experimenting to find some sort of grass or other ground cover that will live more than a few weeks.

The light was made by me from LED strip lighting.

The wife collected it from a creek near our old house. She had it in her flowers outside and was going to leave it when we were moving. I claimed it for my own and tossed it on the uhaul.

I'm trying something ivy-like right now. Our new house has a couple of different types of ground cover in some shaded areas. I cut a few springs and planted them in the enclosure. We'll see how it goes.

Very nice to see some video action. Loki is a great looking snake. I like the red throat morph. It adds just enough subtle color. Can't wait to get an Eastern next year. I'll have to make due with my Texas version until then.

I love the video! My white's tree frog did as well, at least the music - he started croaking loudly in response. I can picture captions like for a silent movie. "Look! A rat!" lol.

Loki is just gorgeous. I was expecting him to hit the rat and coil around it, but they don't constrict as much as say, a corn snake from the looks of it?

Thanks! And...

The Texas version certainly isn't "making do". I've seen some gorgeous ones, and other than the color differences, they're pretty much the same snake as an eastern.

Thank you! No, the snakes of the Drymarchon genus aren't constrictors. That semi-coil that you saw in the video was actually Loki using his body to pin the rat to the ground while he chewed on it and swallowed it. I cut out the part were he dragged it around, snagged it on something, eviscerating it, then nearly ripped the rat in half before swallowing it backwards. They just overpower their prey.

Drymarchons definitely thrash their prey around. Fed my YT Cribo yesterday and it ripped the head right off a chick. I'm always on guard when feeding her bc she's so crazy.

Thanks for the compliments! He really is my pride and joy.

How big is he now?

It has been a while since I measured, but I think he's right around 6 ft. His growth has really slowed down now. Unfortunately, I think he's a little on the small side for his age. He's 3 1/2 years old now. He might slowly creep past the 7 ft mark, but I don't think he's ever going to be the 8 footer I'd hoped. But, that's ok, he's still awesome.

He is still awesome. If I've read right, it seems he's always been small for his age since you got him. Just curious, do you know anything about his parents and whether they were smaller than normal for their age? Wondering how much genetics vs feeding plays into it.

Unless the animal is grossly over or underfed then feeding regime plays very little part v genetics...

Yes, when I got him, he was almost a year old. He'd apparently been "maintenance" fed since hatching and was very small for his age. He's also always been sort of a picky eater for a drymarchon, so maybe that had something to do with it. I did a lot of reading and thinking, and I don't know if a snake that gets off to a slow start during the normal growing years will ever catch up or not. There doesn't seem to be a lot of info on that.

No, I don't know much about his parents. But, I do know there is entirely too much inbreeding with captive eastern indigos. And that can stunt size. There just aren't enough unrelated snakes in captivity. For that reason, I may not ever have another eastern. If I do, it will be from the best cross I can find.

Loki is looking great! It's funny how some snakes constrict and other species don't. He's powerful enough to overcome prey by shaking it that way I suppose (even when it doesn't "need" it). Anyway, always glad to see Loki - really a magnificent animal.

Scaredy cat! Removing your fingers too early at the end!! All it wanted to do is give you a love kiss/bite!

I did the same thing to my 4'6" Albino King, but I moved my fingers before she struck and she hit the lower glass to her ExoTerra cage.

Then last night, I was feeding chicks to my larger charges, in the dark no less (though I was using a pen flashlight for a little illumination), and when I opened the Carpet's cage, he executed a ViperKeeper "snake lunge/strike" outtake, and lunged about 18" out the door and almost got me! Luckily I jumped out of the way in time; so, I put the light on the chick, which it instantly hit, and I closed him up before he had another go. Silly me!!

Haha, yeah, I was just curious if he'd eat more. Normally, one rat is all he'll eat. I got the feeling he was still in eating mode. I started wiggling my fingers, but I was looking down trying to get my camera focus when he started toward me. Startled me a little. I have no desire to take a feeding bite from him.
