ok so i got a baby female corn snake about a month ago and she never does anything but hide. i even had a stick for her to climb on but i took it out because she never used it. moral is, she is not a climber. well today i got a baby male corn snake and put him in a separate tank right beside the female's tank. in a matter of minutes he had scaled the walls of the tank and wedged himself against the screen lid. i opened the lid and he feel back in. a few hours later he did it again. then about an hour later my female did the same thing in her tank. VERY unlike her. i cant stress how extremely non vertical she is. wuts up? are they trying to get to each other? should i introduce them? i am already planning on getting 2 more lid clamps for each tank tomorrow.

Corn Snakes, like most Rat Snakes, are excellent climbers. Snakes do have their own personalities though, your female may just be more inclined to stick to the ground. Or she may just now be getting comfortable in her new home and decided it was time to do some exploring. I would give her back her stick so she has the option to climb a bit if she wants to. Keep them separate until they are ready to breed (assuming you want to breed them). I would give them some more cover as well, they may feel a bit exposed and are wedging themselves against the top in an effort to hide. Baby snakes shouldn't have much open space in their enclosures, they are preyed on by virtually everything in the wild and can be very nervous. Fake plants are great for providing cover that makes little snakes feel safe while at the same time making the enclosure more appealing to the eye.

i just cant see it being a coincidence that she never did it until he moved in next door.

also i can tell they are deffinately trying to get out. they are not simply chilling up there, they are poking around trying to find an opening. i have put some rocks and a thick magazine on top of each lid, but i am still worried about them getting out. i know they can be little hudini's. i'm really having trouble relaxing enough to go to sleep...

They probably are trying to escape. Most snakes would if given the chance. Best to make sure you have an escape proof enclosure to minimize the risk.

Is it possible your first snake was stimulated to move around by the second snake? sure, but it's still perfectly normal behavior whether they're hiding or searching for weaknesses in your security. As was already said, add loads of cover to reduce the snakes' stress, and make sure everything is secure. For non-locking lids, I use bungees, or ropes or straps wrapped around the cage and lid.

i had some weather stripping laying around so i put that all the way around the "ledge" they were wedging themselves into. so now there is no way for them to stay at the top they could only reach their heads up there.

Add a second hide in both enclosures. One hot side one cool side. As for the climbing on the lip by the top, all my rat snakes do that.

i got the lip problem fixed, there is no lip anymore i put weather stripping on the lip so there is no room to pearch. also i bought more clamps so there is a clamp on all four sides of the lid. and there is a hide on both hot and cold sides its just hard to see because of the leaves.

I think corns tend to more terrestrial than other rat snakes. They are definitely capable climbers, but they aren't like yellow or grey rat snakes, who can spend most of their lives in the trees. Corns usually do good in cages with good floor space and a couple of perches.
