Nice! He's a stunner. Enclosure looks great too. Is it bio-active with live plants?

Awesome. I just got back from the Okefenokee. Looked hard for one of these but no luck. Did find a Hognose and Black Racer.

He's gorgeous, the enclosure looks nice too. He looks tiny in the first pic but in the second pic he looks much larger, how big/how old is he?

I'm no expert on snake behavior by any means but is your slate rock under a light? It looks like a nice place to bask :)

Georgia

Yeah it is, but he does it when the light is off also.

The rock will still retain heat after the light goes off. He must think its a prime ambush spot to wait for prey. If you have provided other hides, I wouldn't sweat it. I have plenty of snakes that refuse their hides.

My eastern diamondback doesn't use his hides either. None of my rattlers do in fact. I've found them to be curious, fairly interactive, snakes. When I go into my hotter snake room, my puffs will usually be in their hides, my boa under his bedding, but my rattlers will move to the front of their cages and watch me, tongues flicking. I wouldn't consider your rattler's behavior to be unusual.

Have you tried to feed him yet?
I put a new hide in my 2 EDB's cage and they pretty much stay in it.
