Just shoot from the hip; you don't have to give a lengthy, essay-style answer.

What do you think makes the best beginner amphibian and why?

I must jump right in and recommend the fire bellied toad. Reasons:

Once the proper terrarium is set up, they are easy to feed using crickets, active during the day and fun to watch and listen to. I have had a group of five for about 2 years now.

I always found the whites tree frogs to be a really easy, hardy, calm, and cool species that's very available. That's my vote.

Most newts (eastern and firebelly newts being the easiest to find locally)

I'm agreeing with whites. A healthy one is fat, cute and active. Does not get better than that. Out of all the frogs I've kept whites are my fav.

Whites. Was my first amphibian that I cared for properly and was my best friend (and only friend) for a long time. He was awesome and I still miss him.
