View Full Version : shredder the snapper
here is my snapper, shredder. I have had him 4 years now, when I got him he was smaller than a quarter and had to break up worms to feed him. Well I started feeding him out of my hand and even now he eats out of my hand. I have been trying to figure out his growth rate though, as he is still quite small for 4 years old judging by others snappers. The vet tells me he is in really good health though. Although I did notice he has grown 1/4 of an inch in 3 weeks. These guys are sooo cool:D

Very cool. I've had my Tank - Common snapper for 5 years and he is at 35+ pounds. He was a little larger then a silver dollar when I got him.
Chelydra serpentine are an awesome turtle.

Gotta love snappers!!!!!
ah snappers are awesome, they are totally misinterpreted critters. I like my little guy, he is just like a dog to some aspects :)

I've called mine a "shelled dog" before. Keep us post on your times with Shredder.

That's an awesome little snapper you have there
I havent been able to have him outside in the past couple days just because of rainy weather, so hes been out in the house. I am surprised at how they climb. I usually lay on the couch and cover up with a blanket and let him walk on the couch as to avoid our puppy from wanting to play. He will climb right up the back of the couch, and the steps outside the other day. They are concrete and about 8" tall, he somehow managed to get traction on a ceramic doodad the wife has outside and the step and climbed right up. I think he is part mountain goat or something hahaha.

We will do that.
found out he really like the dried shrimp and some of the turtle pellets, he has never had an interest in any of them before now. When he was smaller, I bought a bunch of different pellets and would never eat them til now :P
Saw Shredder taking a nap out of the water for the 2nd time in his life, he enjoys being out on the lawn but hardly ever basks in his light, unlike his sister Susie which is a midland painted turt. Still gotta get some pics of her. He is really liking the baby shrimp treats that we got for him:)

He looks like a rough one
that was the biggest snapper I have ever caught, took me a while to get him too. He was in awesome health, not a scratch or ding in his shell, lots of leeches though

This turtle is 4 years old?
not the big one, I caught her in a river set back, my small turt is 4
took Shredder out and about the other day, went to the pet store and my work. He really likes one of the guys I work with, he was crawling all over the place and even let Chris rub his chin. My daughter has taken quite the liking to holding him. He crawls up on her lap when she calls his name, even lets her rub his chin and legs. did a complete aquarium overhaul this past weekend to get rid of some worms that were in his tank, and found 2 goldfish that were hiding behind his filter set up, and she wanted to feed him. So I gavve her the golfish and said to throw it in the water, and she was like He wants to take it out of my hand, so she grabbed the tail and put it down and he came up and took it out of her fingers, she thought that was quite cool so she fed the other fish to him as well. Glad he is not an agressive snapper, he is quite good with people like Tank is.

Goldfish can carry a lot of parasites. Glad shredder is so relaxed around people. Many snappers just withdraw in their shell(the best they can)

No I'm aware what turtlw your talking about, that seems very small for 4 years. Has he continued to grow fast since you noticed the rapid growth in a few weeks?
in 6 weeks he has grown 3/8" which is faster than he has grown before
