Went to visit a friend at a campground in Holly, MI today, and they were doing all kinds of events. One of them happened to be a rattlesnake informative program. The specimen shown is a 7 year old female Eastern Massasauga, the only rattlesnake species native to MI. Here are some of the better of the pics I was able to get.:)

This one shows size pretty well, she was in a ten-gallon aquarium. I wasn't too thrilled about the enclosure, didn't think to ask if its what she's always kept in or not. She also looked a bit thin to me.

Gotta love a massasagua!

Sure do! This was my first time ever seeing one, in all honesty I was really surprised by how small she was!

Beautiful snake! Not crazy about choice of substrate.

Yeah, she was a looker for sure, Really vibrant for 7 years old.

Beautiful snake! Not crazy about choice of substrate.

You and me both. I'm really hoping what they had her in was only for travel, it had a very small water bowl, screen top, no hide except the piece of wood shown in the pic, and that doesn't even really count. I have my doubts that it was only for travel though as when I looked over-head it had a rather unpleasant smell and there were a few pieces of shed skin in there. :(

Most likely it was for educational displays. The last thing you want with hots is a lot of extra junk cluttering up their enclosure. Whenever I do educational shows and I bring an animal that I want visible but not to be handled I do similar things.

You should have just asked the owner if it was for display or if the snake lived in that tank. People ask me that question all the time at my displays. I jokingly tell them, Oh no there enclosures are much smaller than that. LOL

Yeah, I didn't really think to ask til after we left, I doubt it was her permanent enclosure, its just the fact that it had an odor that kinda threw me off. I would hope DNR would know better than to keep her like that.
