Disturbing Trend?

I channel surf in the hopes of finding something to watch with some redeeming qualities. Most of the time I'm disappointed.
I'm just wondering if anyone has notice what I have. I've seen a increase in reality shows that feature the killing of animals for so called survival.
Yesterday, I came across a show from the Discovery Channel called "Dual Survival" During this episode one of the idiots was out looking for food. Along came a rather small/young Porcupine. Too bad of it as it was shot with a homemade crossbow and then clubbed to death.
The word "killing" was never used but "harvesting" was.
It seems like our care and concern for wildlife is reaching a low, this type of shows certainly doesn't help to educate the public about conservation or animal welfare.
I'm disturbed by this trend and wondered if anyone else has noticed it or am I just over sensitive.

I agree those kinds of shows, along with many others, are terrible. Completely unnecessary violence.

Yeah..I'm kinda torn on this as well. I am a hunter. I only hunt what I intend to eat. I will not hunt rabbit or squirrel, as I will not eat them. I hunt water fowl and deer and will not waste the animal I harvest (yep, I used the same word).

I watch the same shows, Dual Survival, Naked and Afraid, Dude, You're Screwed, etc...and, while I do find some entertainment (and maybe a small bit of education), I can't help but to think that with the exception of Les Stroud (Survivorman), none of the these shows really really has these guys in dire straits (meaning that camera men/producers there at all times)....So...do you really need to club a porcupine? Probably not.

You eat what you kill rather than slaughtering hundreds then trucking the pieces packaged in cellophane and placed under lights with expiration dates hoping somebody buys them before said date... how much waste is that. I wonder and how many animals died needlessly only to have their a small portion of their rump consumed and the rest possibly wasted?

Does it make a difference if we raise them to be killed or if we harvest them?

I used to hunt when I was younger and we always ate what we killed. My dad thought it was a life/survival skill. I have no issues with hunting for food but I don't like hunting for sport and definitely not for entertainment purposes. I believe we must respect ALL life. I even tell my 4 year old son to not kill the bugs outside :)

I agree(though I do like Dual Survival a bit), but that requires getting the word out. Which is what guido was trying to do.

I forgot about Survivorman and that is the only one of those shows I watch but I don't get the channel it plays on any more.

I have no issue with hunting as long as the animal is used and it is done within the laws laid out by our conservation officers.

But, those shows are so ridiculously scripted and fake I can't watch them.

The shows pretty much suck. Most of what they do is the last thing you would actually do in a survival situation. It's entertainment, sort of. As for the animals, I don't really have an issue. Every episode I watched where an animal was killed, it was eaten. As long as everything was done within the law, it's no different than eating a dead chicken or cow that they brought with them in a lunch box.

Survivorman is the only show I watch when it comes to this genre. When he does kill an animal, it's respectfully and he doesn't make a spectacle out of it.

That I agree with. When Joe teti kills an animal he's all jacked up and got his mean face on. Really? What a tool. Les, Matt Graham, Cody ludin, and many others do so with respect. They take a life, but many times leave nature be, and usually talk about how preciouseach life is.
