Hey everyone, I've wanted a turtle for awhile now and was wondering if anyone knew of species that stay under 6 inches? The two species that I considered aren't legal in this cruddy state so i'm wondering about other species.

Musk / mud. Several different species of muds and musks. If one isnt legal, you have a variety:)

Agreed. Musk. They stay very small, but can't swim as well as the others because of their taller/heavy shell.

Correction: MALE map turtles stay small. Females, on the other hand, will get larger, 12+ inches in shell length.

I'd like to add spotted turtles, they get up to 5" but prices can get expensive

Spotted turtles were first on my list but are illegal to keep in New York as well as stinkpot musk turtles. I'm looking into other species of musk turtles and just need to find someone in my area to buy one from. If I had the space I would get a common snapper in a heartbeat, I absolutely love my friends snapper.

Correction: While females do get larger than males; they do not exceed 12+ inches. They will be anywhere from 7"-10.5".

They also don't swim much because they are bottom dwellers. They should still be provided a good depth of water and a basking spot along with UVB.

You could try online. I bought from underground reptiles.

You might also consider a Reeves Turtle from Asia. They stay around 5 inches, are easy to keep, and are not too expensive. Here's a link to one place that has them available.

True. I had a 100 $ gift card so easy for me lol
We have an African Helmeted turtle (one of the "African Mud Turtles"). He's about 6-7" inches (which is their adult size) and a total doll! They're supposed to be omnivores, but ours lives peacefully with several fish, and has a very nice temperament.
