I had one when I was a kid, over 25 years ago. And my daughter had a couple that I got her for xmas a few years ago. They're pretty simple to care for, and you can make some cool setups for them.
This is the tank I setup for my daughter for xmas:

I have had a group of five in a 20 gallon half land half water tank for a couple of years now. They are active, very pretty, and sometimes make some noise. They seem to have a pecking order and they fight when feeding time comes around but I haven't seen any serious injuries. It is interesting to see how they interact in a group.
Make sure the top is covered at all times because they can climb up glass.

What about handling?
I can't speak to the handling issue except that I have only handled them to move them out to clean the terrarium. They aren't hard to catch and hold onto but they have toxins in their skin so I am very careful not to put my hands to my face after touching them. I use disposable gloves when cleaning.
I don't know how poisonous they are, or if the poison would only affect you if there was a break in the toad's skin. Nevertheless, I am cautious. This is also a reason not to house another species with them, a newt, for example. I have read bad stories.

Amphibians are not a good pet if you are looking for something to handle. They absorb the oils that our skin releases and is harmful to them. FBT's are toxic and can cause you to get sick but this is only if they decide to release toxins. FBT's also don't make the best pet for handling due to how flighty they can be in your hands.

.Lone Watie: All I have is a piece of hard rock candy. But it's not for eatin'. It's just for lookin' through.
Or in the case of frogs, they're just for lookin' AT.

I thought that in captivity they weren't nearly as toxic? Or is that just dart frogs?

Just darts ;)
And I believe mantellas as well.
Just because they aren't as toxic as dart frogs still doesn't mean you want to take a chance.

Not to be contrary, but how risky is it? I mean, don't eat them and I think you're pretty safe. That said, they really aren't good for handling because they'll jump out of your hands.
