As some of you may know, Kahless had gone on an extremely long fast. He hadn't eaten on his own for almost a year (I managed a few successful assist feeds when he got too thin).

Anyway, he has finally started eating live mice, and I've managed to get him back on frozen, but he's only taking f/t mice at the moment. For a 40 inch BP, that's not nearly a big enough meal. Anyway, I feed him the mice more often than you would feed rats. I would like your opinion on his progress. It's nice seeing some meat on his bones again, and I hope he continues eating.

Here are some quick cellphone pics I took for reference:

Looks fine to me, I'm not seeing any real loose skin but that would be a main indicator of an issue. One thing that worked very well for me was scenting my rats like mice. It helped with that jump and may provide the needed push to get him to rats.

To me he looks really good for not eating for that long

I'm surprised actually that he's put on this much weight so far, only eating mice. I've noticed he has more strength now, too. He can really squeeze my arm tight!

Why do BP's have to be so stinkin' picky?!

Cmwells, what do you scent with?

You could try African soft fur rats, bp's usually prefer them and won't go off feed when there eating them from what I know of them

I used the bedding from a mouse, my friend has lots of mice. I would imagine that thawing the two together would be sufficiant. I just rolled the rat in the bedding from the mouse for a couple mins, worked like a charm. But I've never been sure why they're soo picky and it seems to come in waves, they just get picky, then they're not...

If you really wanna jump start the feed you can use African soft furs as mentioned above, but not all places carry them. You could always try a gerbil. They have worked in the past for me when I picked up a rescue that was malnourished and wouldn't eat. But honestly as of now he looks good. Just keep trying.

wow he looks great! Glad to see bp's like this every now and then. These days they're fat and obese.
