View Full Version : Introduction and Corn Snake Question
Ron Miles

My name is Ron Miles. I have been an avid collector of snakes since I was a little boy. Most of the time I catch the snakes and then keep them in airtight containers where they usually die within a few days. I realize this is probably seen as inhumane by many, but I let them die as naturally as possible and see it as much more humane when compared to those that purposefully kill other animals in violent ways so that they can display them on walls and in museums. I don't just throw away the dead snakes.. instead, I preserve them so that my children and my children's children can look into my jars and see what an authentic Eastern Rattler, for example, might have looked like once they go extinct.
In any case, I have several corn snakes that I've been keeping in formaldehyde over the years. I probably only need 2 or 3 of them that I want to keep. These are common snakes that probably won't go extinct any time soon. How much money are these worth? I'd like to sell them.

If people like you left them alone they would not become extinct. I hope people do not think all canadians are like you.

People who "purposefully kill other animals in violent ways so that they can display them on walls and in museums" are hunting animals that are managed by biologists for population growth and health. And the meat is eaten. Nature IS violent, whether you like it or not.
Suffocating animals in jars for your pleasure is weird.

I'm just trying to make snakes safe for my children to look at. The reason I posted here was mostly to find out how much I could sell the corn snakes that I have. I try to treat the snakes as humanely as possible. I know that I could just chop their heads off, but as an animal lover, that just seems cruel. I usually just let them die naturally. I don't understand why that's seen as cruel when I know others are chopping heads off.

Die naturally? You keep them in a container for a few days until they die. Nothing natural about that. They would live many years in the wild or correct setup then die naturally.

So you thinks suffocating is humane? And usually when the head is chopped off the meat is eatin and the skin is used, if you want to display a snake for your kids safely go out and get a snake, put It in proper husbandry and care for it like the snake lover you say you are

Look, I love Canada more than you do. We need to protect what we were born into, and that includes our rights to dominion over animals (and that includes serpents).

I'm arguing against their being kept as 'pets'. THEY ARE NOT PETS. They are animals that need to be wild or else to be kept as artifacts (and that done in as clinical a process as possible).

Take your kids to a museum. Dont make up bs excuses to kill snakes. You are very far from being an animal lover. Kill a protected snake in ontario $250.000 fine. What a knob.

I don't get how you could possibly see suffocating them as a humane death.

Unless you're hunting for food or protecting yourself/others from a dangerous animal there's no logical reason to kill a harmless animal. If you want your kids and grandchildren to see snakes take them to a zoo. Most people prefer to see live animals as opposed to dead ones in jars. I can't think of any person that would buy a dead corn snake kept in formaldehyde. The golden rule includes animals as well.

I just wanted to chime in here and say that I have bought several snakes from Ron over the years. They have always been in mint condition and humanely killed. Highly recommended man of his word.

It just sucks because I already cleared off some space on my kitchen counter for the jars of dead snakes. It was gonna look perfect!
