Reptile safe paint?

The friend who is giving me the snake offered me the cage stack that it lives in but I have to take the Leopard Gecko who lives in the top cage as well :) . The stack is white but I would love to make it black & red or just black but am not sure what paints are reptile safe.

Do you have anything you can put them in till all the fumes are gone, personally I think if you painted them then cover them with a polyurethane and let it dry for about 2 weeks before putting them back in there

Why not use waterproof contact paper?

@ jpsteele80 - Thanks, so any paint would work? I will definitely keep them in different cages while waiting for the paint to be safe for them.

@ MCB - I never thought of that. I'm going to check that out.

You can pretty much use any paint/varnish you want as long as it's coated with some sort of urethane and had enough time to dry until you don't smell any fumes, usually about 2 weeks

If you're planning on re-covering the inside of the cages as well as the outside, I would be very careful with contact paper. Snakes seem to have a knack for finding their way into sticky situations inside a cage. I would never advocate anything really sticky inside of a cage. There have been some real horror stories about snakes getting stuck to duct tape that was inside of the cage and seriously injuring themselves. Just a thought...

Contact paper is very safe when applied correctly, I use it in my cages as well as on my racks without any issues.

@ jpsteele80 - Is polyurethane like a clear coat or something? I always have my brother do this type of thing for me so I am not real sure what that is. My brother said that there is paint with polyurethane in it so would something like that work?

Yes polyurethane is a sealer that you can buy at any hardware store, I've never used a paint/sealer mixture so I can't say for sure how good it will work
