Nice job of helping out one of God's creatures. My wife and have become what we call "The Turtle Patrol" for the last 20 years or so. We always stop to move Box Turtles when we see them on the road. One thing we've found is that if a turtle is headed one direction, you have to put it off the road in the same direction it was headed. For example if you see a Box Turtle in the middle of your lane headed across to the other side of the road and you stop and put it off on your side of the road, it will simply start crossing the road again and possibly get struck by a car. They must have a reason for why they were headed that way and simply getting them off the road doesn't change their reasoning. When we find one on a particularly busy stretch of road, we will hang onto it until we find a nice quiet stretch with lots of woods to release it.
On a side note, I've noticed a significant decline in the number of Box Turtles in the past 4-5 years. Likewise, I've noticed a big increase in the number of Raccoons which may be raiding the nests of the Box Turtles.
