Question on bin housing.

I am thinking about getting a bin set-up if I get a Rosy Boa since they are cheap and really easy to clean but I have a couple of questions first. I am worried about the snake popping the lid off so what brands are best? I used a Sterilite bin for a Corn Snake that I use to have but Rosy Boas seem like they are stronger so I am not sure it one could push the lid off. My other question is how tall would the bin need to be for a adult Rosy Boa?

I use tubs for the vast majority of my snakes and for the ones that like to push on the lids I use paper clips. Not the thin ones but the big ones used for large stacks of papers. For the sterilite tubs that you just place the lid on and it clips on the ends, the clips work great, because they can go anywhere on the sides and are strong enough to keep the snake from escaping. I have been using them for a couple months now with zero escapes. I'll take a picture of what i'm talking about when I get home.

Preferably, you would build a rack to serve as your lid, but if you do not want that for whatever reason then you can secure the bin lid with bungee cords.

These are good but too big for a young rosy boa. I prefer tubs like this as the latches on the end are very sturdy and the interlocking lid/side design prevents even my most persistent escape artists from getting out (and I've got two that are a real headache at times...).

I agree that those are too big for a young rosey, but they do have different sizes. That's just the only one I could find at the moment.

I gotcha, I looked for others that have the latches on the side but didn't see any. I really like that idea, would be ideal for escape artists.

Ohh, they are amazing. I house a few kings in them for a buddy and no escapes. They are actually water proof, so there is a foam insert in the Grove.

I drill a hole threw the handles and drop a long bolt threw to prevent a snake from popping them open.

Next I drill a hole threw the side of the lid and the container and then secure a bolt to the container. The bolt then slips threw the hole in the lid and prevents the snake from pushing up in the middle of the side of the lid, where it is weak.

@ aaron_cg - That is a really neat bin but I could not find any like that at my local Walmart. I will have to see if they have them online.

@ Batessi - I am hoping I don't have to build anything as I am awful at that kind of thing.

@ millertime89 - I did not see that bin when I was at Walmart but I will check again next time I am down there.

@ SSSSnakes - That looks like it would be easy to do and really secure. I think I might try that.

Just adding to this thread...

Here is how I secure my tubs. This works on the Sterilite 1755 32 qt tubs (and any series with the same dimension "Lip" around the rim. Use 3/8 inch square dowels and a glue gun, with large binder clips:

These are the bins i use, the clips are much stronger than some of the ones shown above, they lock on as a solid bar across the lid and take a fair bit of pressure to move. Never had an escapee

@ Knox - That is a really neat idea and I will keep that in mind if I wind up using a bin.

@ aRepDysfunction - I looked at those types of bins but the lids lifted up to much for comfort in the middle of the long side on the longer bins.
