If people in cars would do the same.
If people in cars would do the same.
Here in Tennessee they seem to swerve to run snakes and turtles over, not to avoid them :(

Same here. Whats worse is when people post a picture to my facebook page showing a mangled Texas Rat Snake and the posters are proud because the "destroyed a deadly rattlesnake."

Sadly, this is all too common.
We were at a festival last weekend, and heard screaming about a rattler. My husband and I go over, and guess what they're actually wailing about?
A gopher snake.
My husband used a cane to safely lift it away and take it to the grassy area behind the vendors.
A lot of the fear of snakes comes from puritanical origins, in America-- where the serpent is seen as a figure of evil. Hilariously, in other cultures, the snake is a symbol of wisdom and healing.

I've encountered that mentality many times. Sadly not all people are rational and as a result hold onto unsubstantiated beliefs..
