Caught two snakes of the same species today.
Let the bigger one go and am keeping the small one for a few days.
I have no idea what species he/she is though.
Is light gray/brown in color with darker brown colored strattles
I think it has a checkered belly but I can't get a good look right now.
Caught them in the fort Wayne/Leo area in Indiana
Does anyone have any idea what species this is?

It looks almost exactly like the little water snake I caught today and released. I agree with your guess, it is a water snake.

I'm glad that the harmless water snakes are getting some attention! Very cool and misunderstood.

He TORE up the tank :p
Moss was everywhere and his water dish full of dirt.
He is VERY active and seems a little more curious, but is still a bit easily startled.
I held him for about 10mins without any strikes today.
Just redid his tank and he's already burrowing under the moss and swimming in his new water dish I added (put in a bigger water dish for him to soak in and enjoy)
Going to enjoy his company for one more night then let him go tomorrow evening

I set-up mine more like I would like a small aquatic turtle: water in the majority of the tank with a small submersible filter, and a few areas to get out and bask. As with yours, he definitely uses every inch of it.

It's only took about an hour before all the dirt and moss has been burrowed through again and the water I just put in is already dirty again xD he is a very active snake
I thinks it's amazing how your temporary housing looks better than most people permanent enclosures. Good job.
