I just joined this forum because I need help with identifying a snake in my backyard - gopher or rattler, I can't decide and snakes are not my area of expertise by any means. Anyway, it appears I need to make a couple posts first before I can post links or photos, so, hi there… I'm a 27/f in central California and I've got a snake in my backyard right now, lol. Hopefully I can make a reply post the pictures I took :crazy2:

The snake is still in the backyard and no one can decide on whether it's a rattler or a gopher snake. It's got so many ambivalent traits regarding the tell-tale signs, and I'm not a reptilian person to begin with at all :(

I have ten pictures of it… The thing that's confusing me is that it along with rattling its tail which has no rattle, the tail has a bright orange coloring. I read on Wikipedia that that's something a juvenile rattler has. Also, its skin is not shiny at all, however, its scales don't stick up like a diamond back's either…
