My Room Build Thread (The Snake Pit)

Sometime ago I decided to convert the garage into a snake room (adopted name by my son is the ‘Snake Pit’)

From the off it has always set out to be a breeding project for dwarf & super dwarf retics. With the floor space I have we decided to start off with eight 3ft x 6ft x 16inch vivs, and two racks of twelve tubs making twenty four of those (yet to be fitted). We also managed to add in a GTP viv against the opposite wall. One of the tub racks is going to be a small breeding project of corns for my son

It has been quite a task to be honest, thoroughly enjoyable but hard work neither the less. Its fully insulated all around with 125mm kingspan, has a raised insulated floor and lowered insulated roof. New electrics throughout as well as new plumbing. Its ventilated with a good large air intake fan on one side (that will be connected to a thermostat) and vented on the opposite end higher up. We dropped a row of LED lights in running down the centre of the room with a couple over the sink unit. We also invested in a backup generator connected to an ATS panel that auto starts the jenny if (and when) the power goes.

The vivs are not setup fully yet, there’ll be no animals for a few weeks either but thought I’d share pictures of work so far.

I hardwired an IP camera in today, wife thinks I am crazy but I want to keep an eye on my investment, that and making sure there are no surprises when I go in in the mornings LOL!

I might give you guys the remote address one day so you can watch live laying and hatching :D

Looks like my generator was a star buy, I was woken this morning by noise the of the jenny at 6.05am! Power wasn't restored until 1.15pm, everything switched over seamlessly, phew :)

The next couple of weeks is phase two of new inhabitants and the second stack including the GTP's, so keep watching ;)

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would post this little update as I know some of you guys follow my build thread.

Moved onto the start of the finish hopefully! My second rack came and I finished fitting out my bespoke incubator for the corn girls. By Wednesday I am hoping to have it all finished off. I just need to fit the viv lights and kick plate to fit under the vivs and pimp out my GTP enclosure.

To say we are over the moon is an understatement! All lights are on day / night timers so the room lighting, day & night temps, ambient room cooling and humidity are all self controlled.

We also managed to fit the GTP enclosure, kept this nice and simple but we're happy with it.

To be honest they are very easy to fit, just make sure you get a higher rated driver than you need as that way the LED / Driver won't burnout as quick. With my setup I have one strip & driver across two vivs drilled through both (4 in total). The LED strip is very thin and they stick straight to the roof of the viv, mine are set to shine down. They also generate very little if no heat at all and are very cost effective to run. They are set on a twelve hour cycle.

Yes, that whole running water and counter space thing is why I chose to use my kitchen as the reptile room. Mine won't be as fancy, but it'll be functional and convenient. I have a few tanks in there now, but preparing to put in a 7ft long 2 foot high 2 foot deep enclosure in with a stand and hood. I'm single nowdays and my kids don't live here, even when they stay here with me I won't lie, I don't cook. Without the need for an oven the only thing I need to keep in there is the fridge.
