Post Shed Pictures

Finally got a few good pictures of my JCP after his first shed with me! It's been a couple of weeks, but better late than never! You can tell that his yellows definitely aren't as bright as they appear under artificial lighting, but they're definitely coming in nicely.

Bonus snake selfie! My Facebook profile picture - almost didn't use it because I know snakes scare some of my friends. But then I figured they weren't seeing the snake in person, so what the heck. Surprising number of friends liked it, which was pretty cool!

He shows up as a pretty bright yellow in my cellphone pictures (even with bright natural lighting) but with when I use the DSLR, it seems to wash him out just a little. He's currently somewhere in between, but I'm really, really happy with him.

I've also had a couple people comment on how small he is for his age, but I think that's just because he had a slow start at the breeder's. I don't mind him growing slow, though right now he's getting rat pinkies weekly. Will love to see him fully grown and mature but also enjoying his small size presently!

Your jungle is coming along nicely. The emphasis on color saturation is overrated imo. Any carpet whether it's dark and drab or bright and colorful is beautiful.

With most dslr's, you can change the color tone in the edit/touch-up settings via menu to make the picture accurately match real life colors. Or you can just mess around with white balance manually.

Thanks! I think mine might be very small for his age (if what someone else told me was true). The breeder says that he had his first shed sometime in July 2013, so he must be at least around 9 months old. I don't mind, though :) He has a really lovely temperament and I'm able to handle him easily and walk with him through the house. Even my roommates who are scared of snakes think he's cute. I'm still careful with my movements when I'm around him, but he's definitely not as quick to nip as he used to be. Hope yours will grow out if it as well!

Thanks! And yeah, to clarify I really only meant to mention the color/saturation because of the weird variation between my pictures (especially if you compare cellphone and DSLR shots). The photography nerd in me likes everything to be somewhat consistent, and I'd do the same no matter what pictures I was sharing. The inconsistency throws me off, which is why I feel a need to explain. It's not as noticeable with my preferred subjects (dogs and people), but a JCP is significantly more colorful so I'm still getting used to it myself.

ATM I think I have my camera setting colors actually geared more towards violet/magenta because my D7000 naturally adds a weird green hue to everything. I still need to work on my skills with the camera, but for now I just shoot everything in RAW and if I can't get it right SOOC I'll try to adjust in PP.

And I know the talk about flashy color/high saturation is probably exhausting for a lot of people to hear, and old news. I apologize for that and can understand, having experienced similar frustrations with other hobbies/interest of mine. Rest assured, as I had said even before this snake shed... I'd be happy with him as is. He's a great looking animal with a lovely temperament, and here to stay for life. It was actually a very lightly colored JCP that first drew me in to this type to begin with. I didn't really see the colors or level of contrast, just the beautiful patterns :) I agree that all of them are incredible.

That said! This is my first venture into the hobby and into the world of reptiles. And maybe it's also because I'm one of those girls and I like pretty things to look at ;) I have no doubt that I'll get over this "oooooh, pretty!" phase with the bright yellows and high contrast, but for now, I've only been in the game 6 or 7 months. I'm inexperienced and have had very, very limited contact with reptiles and the community. I'm going to be distracted by flashy, shiny things and I'm going to want to brag a little when my baby snake just shed. Especially if he's beginning to look exactly like the snake I wanted when I started looking for breeders!

So, just bear with me for a little longer. I do think they're all beautiful, and I'm more attached to this little dude than I thought I could be. He's not going anywhere, and I'm more in it for the pet aspect than I am the display potential. That said, I'll still probably talk about his color and contrast and for the foreseeable future, the flashy ones will still be my aesthetic preference. I have no doubt that my preferences will change and expand in the future, but for now it's what it is!

Haha sorry, that got really long. I know what I said wasn't quite in response to what you meant in your comment. And I did take your comment very positively! But I also know that my answer might be in response to what a few people have been thinking, so I want to just clear that all up.

Nice snake! :) I'd feed a bigger rat, though. I feed pinky rats to my BRB who is 2-3 months old now and a lot smaller than your carpet. It should show a bump in the stomach and be able 1 1/2 size of the head or the size of the largest part of the body.

Aww, thanks! They're definitely different than photographing dogs... No blurry legs, and no slobber on the camera! LOL. But I love the different aspect photographing a reptile brings to the picture... they're just so awesome.

Thank you for the comment and the advice! The pinky rats I'm feeding him now are pretty big, definitely shows as a lump in his stomach, but probably 1.2x or 1.3x the widest part of his body? I think the place I buy from just has larger pinky rats, because I bought from another store last week that had tiny pinkies! The ones I usually feed were at least 2x their size.

But I'll check how large the fuzzies they sell are, though! If they're appropriately sized, I'll start feeding those instead!

Of course! Was really wowed that you were able to get those shots with basic lenses. And yeah, it's great not having to worry about removing leashes or an overexcited subject, but it's also a learning experience when I'm trying to figure out the right settings, too! Aperture in particular, because snakes are so long and little!
