how these things are allowed to happen without any lawful recourse is simply unbelievable in a modern civilization - its been far to long that animal welfare has been ignored by US law....but don't expect any politicians to take the lead on the issue, only the people can make it a priority and ensure animals are not abused for human entertainment (and food).

I think part of it might be the fact that these rattlesnake roundups help the local economy, so the local government is willing to look the other way a bit. And part of it is also the fact that a lot of people just don't care about reptiles, much less venomous ones. We live in a would where idiots kill all snakes on sight because they're "poisonous," so it will be hard to convince many to save rattlesnakes that they see as potentially lethal pests.

That's so sad and disturbing...
How on earth is this still acceptable?

I think I know but it's against forum rules.
This is nothing short of animal cruelty. A complete lack of respect for another living creature. The snake roundups are a mixed bag for me. I honestly don't have an issue for the killing and consuming of animals. I'm a sportsman myself and on any given year I hunt and fish, I kill hundreds of animals. All of which are utilized for their meat, and if possible I try to find uses for other parts as well. Animals are a renewable resource and so long as they are killed as ethically and humanely as possible, all the while ensuring that certain regulations are followed to not adversely affect the population, I see no problem.
That being said these events lack any respect for the animals that they exploit. And this is a sick awakening proving just that. If this was any species other than a snake, venomous non the less, this would have blown up nationwide.

People who attend events like this for "fun" need to have their teeth ripped out from their skull with pliers because I guess it won't bother them.

So I began YouTubing more videos about the round ups and found this comment that made my blood boil.
"If these rattlesnake roundups didn't take place do you realize how over populated they would become? I would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather see a snake get his head cut off then to hear of children getting bit do to over population. It just goes to show where your priorities lie"
Why do snakes have to die because of them defending themselves? Why can't the public just be educated and be aware of the wildlife around them?
I totally agree with zap. This is terrible, and to go along with IW I agree as well. I hunt and fish, I kill animals and utilize everything I can. I'm not doing it "for fun" or "saving the neighborhood children" or anything. People need to educate their kids just a little more and make them realize what is and is not right, and teach them all about wildlife. Killing them or ripping out their teeth isn't getting rid of the problem.

Okay so. This is very bad and all but... If they defanged it, why sew its mouth shut?
And I'm assuming that since its sewn shut it just slowly dies of starvation and dehydration? or do they every once in awhile, unsew it? I'm assuming they don't....?

there are other things in the wild which take care of the rattlesnake 'overpopulation'... people think that once they put a fence around some land and build a house, it becomes theirs, and they forget about the wildlife that doesn't follow fence lines or county borders. Seeing a rattlesnake or any wildlife on your land doesn't mean there are 'too many' and an overpopulation, it probably means you have rodents around. Period.
Someone in my VET SCHOOL class shot and killed a supposed rattlesnake on her porch the other morning. Then she inspected the mutilated body and changed her mind that it was definitely a moccasin (but there was no head left). Im almost positive it was a non-venomous water snake, but she has several dogs and needed to watch out for them.
I told her next time give me a call and i will remove it, whatever the species. :/

it looked like some kind of school event/she was from a high school. i imagine it makes people more willing to touch it, and then go home and say wow guess what i did today!! Plus, without removing the venom glands, the venom is still there (an issue if the other teeth puncture the skin), and the fangs will eventually grow back.
I was very concerned with the timeline, she made it sound like they had this same snake last year? how long is the mouth sewn shut? WHY IS THIS BEING PROMOTED IN YOUTHS??
This is incredibly sad. How does the poor thing eat and drink?

it doesnt, it just dies a very slow and very painful death

I've said this for years. People are the most destructive, dangerous animals on the planet, yet the only species who's population goes unchecked.

evolution keeps all species in check, no species has ever dominated its environment in the way that humans do, without causing its own extinction in the process.

I firmly believe we're well on our way. Maybe not an all out extinction, but something is bound to happen to flip our world upside down.
