Started working on an enclosure for my centralian this week. It started out as a free standing wardrobe from Ikea. It's not the best wood, but I don't plan to have high humidity so I think it should be ok. The background is made of large chunks of bark I pulled off of a dead elm tree. I pinned them to the wall with a finish nail or two and then filled in the spaces with spray foam insulation which holds them in place. The two shelf mushrooms I made with a thin piece of wood sandwiched in some styrofoam covered in grout. I really like how they turned out. I still need to put in the substrate dam, lights and heat and get some glass for the doors, but it's coming along nicely.

A masterpiece! Wouldn't those shelves be too small later on when your bredli gets bigger?

Thanks. The top shelf will be small, but I think the bottom shelf will be fine. I can add a branch nearby for him to span if I need to.

So, I made an interesting discovery when selecting a climbing branch for this enclosure. We always hear about driftwood being desirable because it's twisted and neat looking, and I had always been told that it gets that way from being in the water for long periods of time. As it turns out, the twisting has absolutely nothing to do with being drift wood or from being in the water. The intersting looking peices of "driftwood" are sections of root, not branches, and they develop that way by growing through soil. They are just more readily found in the water where trees have been washed out from erosion. My big branch is a section of root from an upturned tree.

The embarassing thing is that in 6+ years of botany classes I never picked up on this!
