What's the difference between a sorong and aru GTP?

aru is an island locality. Sorong is is a mainland locality. Aru's are usually defined by their white specks and Sorongs for their blue dorsal stripe. But with mainland types, looks are variable and one type may look like another. If I'm correct, I think arus do get just a bit bigger than most mainland types as well.

Could a baby Sorong or Aru be put in a 24x24x24 cage to start? Or does it HAVE to be in a small cage for the first year?

Cage size doesn't matter. Security and cover does.

If you put a baby gtp in a 2x2x2 you'll need to really put up a lot of perches, vines, plants...etc to make it feel safe. With a smaller enclosure I guess you could get away with a few perches or so. If it were me, I'd start anything off in a larger enclosure filled with decor, that way I can see more natural behaviour. Just make sure everything in the cage is easily removable so during cleaning or maintenance you can take the snake out without actually touching the snake.
