Wild caught

Just curious, I have seen a handful of folks with wild caught herps on the forums. Is adding a wild caught animal to a captive bred collection a good idea?

A very carful quarantine period is defiantly needed, also fecal sample need to be done.

You have to quarantine for 3-6 months, deworm the wild-caught snake and if possible have a fecal sample done. I work with a lot of rare viper species, so the majority of my animals are wild-caught. All have been quarantined, and treated with dewormers when needed.

Thanks, I assumed a longer quarantine would be necessary . I didn't think about checking for parasites. I do a lot of field herping and you never know what you may find. I'm not sure if I would keep anything I'm mainly interested in what others think.

You wanna be very careful. I agree with RyanReptile on quarantine. Captives can get pretty sick on what w/c animals come in with it. Not worth the risk :)

unless you were to have all the correct tests and treatments done by a good reptile vet,then it can be pretty dangerous adding wild caught to your collection

I think that's the best route in most cases...until I come across a rubber boa this summer. :yes:

Unless the wild-caught snakes are infected with air-borne parasites, you shouldn't have a problem IF you practice proper husbandry and quarantine.

As I said before, I keep a lot of wild-caught species. Most of these are long-term captives, but I've successfully acclimated fresh imports as well. I've dewormed the fresh imports, quarantined, and finally introduced into the main rooms when they were healthy and acclimated. In years of doing this, I've never had any problems with captive-bred snakes acquiring illnesses or parasites from the wild-caught ones.
