Is a UTH for carpets necessary? I've noticed that mine likes to bask on her perch under the CHE, and seems to like to get off to cool down.....

My CHE doesn't do an effective job at heating under the hide, so I have a UTH for now to provide a warm hide for after meals and during shed. I'll reevaluate the situation when I switch to an RHP. I also understand that mature carpets rarely use the hide, so it may not be necessary after a while.

I only used a CHE for my carpet - in fact for all my snakes :)

I don't think your carpet will care whether it needs to perch or hide in order to heat up. When I keep babies in racks before they are moved into their enclosures, they use their hides(over heat tape) and when they are moved up in plastic cages they use their perches(under an RHP).
But when they are not heating up, I usually find them ontop of their hide or on a perch somewhere on the cool side.

i use ceramics and they give carpets all they require mate
that said,i'm now thinking of going with light emmiting bulbs for daytime, then nothing at night,in winter i will put heat mats in incase the night temps drop too low,it will give them something to go to for heat
cheers shaun

I only use UTH and the work just find. My Carpets are almost always on the perch at the cool end. After eating they will be on the heat or perched above it. It also would depend on how big you cages is.

It is a huge custom cage. Not sure on the exact dims. Takes alot to heat the bad boy up!

Then you might need both just to keep temps up.

If its a huge cage yes you might. I keep a 4x2x4 in a 75°room using one 80watt rhp and it works perfectly.

Ha, I was with Terranaut. I guess you can tell you're an old school metal head when the first thing that comes to our minds is Metallica (and the only good Metallica, for that matter).
