View Full Version : humidity box question
hi, new to the forum and new to sand boas. I have owned several snakes, a few lizards and I currently have an emperor scorpion colony. My question is about the tank setup for my young (about a year old if that) Kenyan sand boa. I have read that a humidity box is recommended for them to aid with shedding etc... That is a plastic box with a small hole and damp paper towels in it. Should this be completely seperate from their hide? Or can you make their hide a humid setting with paper towels or moss? And also what is the best to use moss or damp paper towel I have read that they will eat their substrate when feeding so is moss safe in that regard? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated

Umm... I'm not sure if I understand completely, but let me give it a try.
Lets say you have one hide. You add a humid hide. You do not put it inside your other hide (or at least I have never heard someone doing that before....)
And I would put moss in the humid hide. But if you don't have any around I guess you could use damp paper towels...
I would use sphagnum moss, thats what I use. And paper towel? I don't know... What ever you have at home I guess...
And do you plan on feeding her in the humid hide? Are you keeping her on paper towels?
If you are really worried about it eating the moss (which is less of a chance of being eaten compared to lets say eco earth) you can put in a different tub lined with paper towel or newspaper
If I am misunderstanding anything, just say! :)

I myself use a separate container for their humid hide, usually a tupperware container filled with damp sphagnum moss. I always have used the moss with my humid hides, but damp paper towels work as well. It's whatever you feel comfortable using, they both serve the purpose quite well :)
Ok, I would prefer to use moss so I'll just go with some sphagnum moss. Thank you. The other part of the question was badly worded but I guess what I was asking was can you just make their hide humid by adding sphagnum moss to the inside of it and no separate humidity box or is it better to leave their hide relatively dry and have a separate humidity box in the enclosure? Probably a dumb question...idk. Oh and no, I do not currently use any paper towels but a breeder I spoke to mentioned it so I figured I would ask anyway. Thank you for the replies!

hmm... Well if you have a lot of other hides (wheather it be hides from plants or from other hide boxes) I would just add moss in the hide. If not, I would add a whole new hide just with the sphagnum moss in it.

You can use a hide but I use a separate container,
I use a small round Tupperware container with a lid on it, I hole cut in it and smooth the rough edges, then I put some sphag moss in it and keep it damp. All my snakes go in it all by themselves when getting ready to shed.
