GTP now legal to own in MA w/o permit

Apparently the GTP has been removed from the list of animals requiring a permit..

I knew it used to be on the list and as I was researching how to acquire a permit, I found out that they no longer require one!

Nice. But why would they need one, I mean, I'm guessing you could have a ball python w/o a permit, they are around the same size? That's kinda weird imo

Stupid you mean. Ackies were also taken off the list of banned species I believe, and we all know how ferocious those can be...

In MA you need a permit for ETBs, GTPs, Afrocks, Retics and all species of Annies

All hots as well, but it's a different permit I believe?

I remember reading somewhere about how these animals were seen as more difficult/dangerous to keep , or atleast that was the reasoning for the permit. I can understand the giants, but not so much the ETB and GTP.

Wow what a stupid world. For what reason are they banned? They are skinny stationary lazy snakes that dont get bigger than 6 feet(most stop at 4). And couldnt survive most winters in the US if released or escaped

Technically they were not "banned", there was a process of requesting a permit and an application fee for said permit. With no gaurentee of approval.

So you could still own one, it is just a lot easier now without the extra hassle of required paperwork.

I think the permits may be a tactic to discourage people from impulsively buying a snake species that has more demanding requirements to be kept properly.

But yes, we live in a very stupid world indeed :sad:

They made quite a few changes to the laws. Here is a link to the actual State Regulations. Some animals have been added to the banned list while others removed from it.

Now if only the reptile community would write a 'Thank you' to the legislators responsible, to show them that we appreciate our hobby being taken seriously, and for them making it easier and more rewarding for us to do what we love. Imagine if we didn't just gripe about our rights that were at risk, but also appreciated when those rights were recognized and enabled?

Ahh I see the ETB is also no longer on the list, I was going to say earlier that it was strange to remove the GTP and not the other..

Isn't a permit needed for chams out there as well?
