I finally have my first snake (as of this Saturday) and am absolutely thrilled with him! He's a really lovely little 2013 Jungle Carpet Python, probably around 5-6 months of age. I've named him Impulse, but that might change later on if I think of something else.

I did make the newbie mistake of handling him several times on the first 2 days I had him - he's inquisitive outside of his enclosure, and my jacket pocket quickly became his favorite spot to hang out in. Inside his enclosure he's a little wary of hands but didn't try to bite at all. I've been able to change his water and readjust his hides with no problem at all. His feeding response is intense, though, but I'm very happy with that! Was worried that my mistake would cause him to be too stressed to eat, but he took his food like a champ. So I'll leave him alone until he's had a few more feedings and then I'll start handling him daily. I was prepared for a spastic piranha, but he's been very good so I hope he'll tame down even more with handling and age/growth! He's in a tiny tub for now (at the recommendation of a few JCP owners/breeders I spoke to, and his breeder), but I expect him to outgrow it soon and I'll be looking into a larger and better enclosure. For now though it seems to be working for him, and he's utilizing every part of the set up.

Really appreciate everyone on the board who helped me out in my other thread - things are looking pretty good now.

Just got home and out of his traveling container! I'm wearing gloves because it was freezing : )

Feeding night! Didn't catch any shots of him eating, but here's one of him with a hold on the fuzzy and scoping out his surroundings.

That snake is going to be a stunner when fully grown. Already looks like a trophy.

The people you got advice from are very knowledgable but a big enclosure is definitely not bad for a carpet so long as you provide some hides and branches.

I'm actually moving one of my 2013 babies into a 3x2x2.

Thanks, I think so, too! The breeder does a great job and I'm really excited to have this little guy.

I really hope so! I'm already 110% happy with him and look forward to seeing how he turns out in a couple of years. Between his current appearance and what I've seen of his family tree, I have high hopes :)

I will definitely look into a larger enclosure - even as I was putting everything together I thought I'd have to upgrade relatively soon. The little tub wasn't even able to fit both hides and the water bowl I bought so I had to look around the house for something temporary. I'm actually in the process of moving which is why I was so receptive to the idea of a tiny enclosure for now, but in a few weeks I'll start looking into something larger. I have a few Sterilite bins of various sizes that would all work, and I'd really like to have an enclosure where I could add a few more climbs and fake vegetation.

A friend gave me his 60-80 gallon fish tank and stand to use in the future, and I plan to clean it and fix it up into something that will retain heat better. It'll be a while before he needs to move into that, though, so I'll have plenty of time to get that all set up. If I can manage to get the heat and humidity right with that tank, it will be a really nice display.

Thanks so much! I'm bad with names, but Impulse just seemed to fit for a snake. My roommate also mentioned that it made her think of electricity, which matches his colors, too.

Beautiful snake, and awesome pictures! He's very cute!

Thank you! Snakes are a lot tougher to photograph than people and larger animals, which is what I'm used to, but I'm trying! I may just have to build that light box finally and see about getting a macro lens.

Gorgeous snake, I like the name too :)

Thanks!! That's good to hear, I don't usually come up with very good names :D

I use a Nikon D7000 with the 50mm f/1.8 lens primarily. A couple of these were taken with the 85mm f/1.8. As you can see, I am NOT equipped for photographing a snake LOL I mostly enjoy portraiture, but now I'm researching macro lenses...

I do have a decent external flash, but natural lighting and large windows are my favorite "tools" for taking pictures.

Nice photos of a beautiful Carpet.

Thank you! I appreciate it :)

Beautiful snake! May I ask which breeder you got him from? I know a lot of the carpet breeders. That is going to be a gorgeous animal when he grows up- you can tell from the clean pattern and vibrant yellow.

I have a Jungle/jag sibling that looked like that when I got him, and now is insanely bright.

Nice jungle Willow. Would never guess that to be a coastal jungle.

Thanks. I really didn't expect him to turn out so well. He's from my good friend Mike Curtin, and is actually a brother of the snake that founded the ocelot jaguar line.

Thanks - me neither!! I know they go through their "ugly" duckling stages when they are young, but this guy's looking pretty good for an ugly duckling!

Very nice photos and snake!

Thank you! Hope to get some more practice taking pictures - there are some great snake photos that I've seen on this board and I'd like to learn a thing or two :)

Thanks! He's from Nick Mutton - I found him through a list of vendors at the nearest reptile expo and saw that he had a really fantastic reputation in the community. Couldn't have found a better guy to work with, I'll definitely continue purchasing from him in the future.

Yours is an incredible looking animal, and exactly what I was looking for when I chose to get a JCP!! All the nice comments on this guy's looks give me high hopes - it took me a while and some asking around to finally settle on this particular snake. Really glad that I did! Hope he turns out nearly as nice as yours, I am completely in love with the bright yellows and good contrast.
