View Full Version : Two new rescues!
I got a call this morning of a guy who took in two snakes from a shelter as the shelter said they were too much for him to handle. The guy had experience with other reptiles and was giving away two huge female (what I think) CP's. He said they had mites and hadn't eaten in a while.
We get there and he has them both in tanks with aspen woodchips (horrible for mites!). One has HORRIBLE shed stuck on her, layers of crimpled skin on her back. She didn't have a bowl to soak in. The other was sitting and soaking in his bowl and not moving. We took them both home, gave the one with the bad shedding a bath. We bathed her and put oil over her..it took out HUNDREDS of mites. The dead mites felt like sand on my hands for how many their was. The guy never did anything about it because he was too scared to handle her. A good bath later and she's almost free of stuck shed. I'll continue the treatment and look at her better tomorrow because it looks like she has minor scale rot as well.

Will have pictures of the other one soon, I'm waiting for my water heater to heat up so I could get her into a warm bath. :)

awesome job. What are they being kept in now?
I'm keeping them in 40 gallons with newspaper substrate so I could clean it out easily a few times a day to get rid of the mites, and they have a huge water bowl to soak in which will also be changed many times a day. Once they're mite free I'll have them in a nice custom enclosure :)

How big are those carpets? The one in the picture looks a good 6 feet long. What sized enclosure wil you be giving them(their custom enclosures)

Awesome! Thanks for taking them :D
They're both 6-7 feet. I'd provide them a 2x5 no problem with height. They aren't my first CP. I have all my snakes in large custom enclosures, my 7 foot BCI is in a 6x2. :) I'm not worried about housing them at all.

Good job and for the record that one is a Jungle. It looks just like my big girl.
Thanks :) Was just trying to see what she was. I'm going to give the other girl a soak now and get some pictures of her!

Definitely has jungle blood in her but without lineage information you can never know. A diamond jungle jag sibling can look exactly like a pure jungle, even a coastal jungle can look like a jungle or vice versa. Either way they are all morelia spilota and awesome snakes to keep.
Good job, that's awesome. Can't wait to see them get better. :)
Thanks Kera :)
Here's some pictures of the second one. Think she's bigger than the other female. Not as many mites on her thankfully but still quite a few. She moves a lot

Is she in blue? Or is it just the camera making her eyes that color? Just curious. Those are some beautiful girls. Good luck with them, glad they're in your care :)
I think she might be about to shed soon. Her colors seem dulled out and her eyes are kind of blue too, guess I'll have to wait and see. :)
That's awesome, hopefully it's a good shed. Best of luck~ will you be keeping them or just nursing back to health then finding a home? so many questions, sorry :P
Thanks, and no don't worry, I don't mind questions. I'll be keeping the first girl for sure. I want to keep the second one but will need to see if I'll have the space, especially with a new rainbow boa coming here in the next two weeks (have had a baby reserved for a while). I feel like I'll be keeping both in the end though. :p

so glad you were able to rescue them! such sad pics :(
I had to do a double take at the first picture because it caught my eye before I read through the post. It looks like you've already done an incredible job and made a huge difference. Really incredible :)
Good work Skits, keep us updated

I'm sure they'll definitely grow on you. Again, good luck with them and your rainbow!
Thanks everyone :)
Today they seem to already be doing better. The yellow-er girl was laying on the floor of her tank and her colors seem a lot better already. The other one was still soaking in his bowl. I'll be getting mite spray either today or tomorrow and hopefully it'll do wonders.

Quarantine...
Yes they're definitely quarantined far from the rest of my group.

Good to see them with a responsible owner.
How's the temperament on them?
The yellow-er girl seems to have an attitude, she'll hiss a lot but that was after an hour long trip home in a pillowcase, and a bath. The one that was keeping her before me said she was so aggressive and had the tank strapped down, he hadn't even tried taking her out. I moved her around in the tub and handled her with a snake hook and she seemed fine. The other one is apparently tame and doesn't seem too bad. :) I'll handle them more once they're mite free as I'm too nervous to pass it on to the rest of my reptiles.
