View Full Version : Recommendations for incubator
Just "walked in on" python porn tonight. I'm thinking it may be proactive to have an incubator waiting, just in case. Any recommendations on brands/types/etc? Anything to specifically avoid?

Most of the commercially available ones are junk. I would build one or find someone to help you build one if possible. You could give maternal incubation a try too or try and find someone close by that was space in their incubator.

Millertime89,
Do you know of any plans available for building your own incubator? I saw one here where a member used an old mini-refrigerator, but that would be big-time overkill for what I would need. Any other incubator plans out there? Thanks

Just use a small cooler instead of a fridge.
this isn't bad. Adjust his design to suit your needs.

I would contact Aaron or give mykee a try. They use mini fridges
Thanks guys...I'm not too "crafty" when it comes to DIY stuff. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

That's why I like their build its pretty straight forward. If you can't get a hold of mykee he has instructions on the strictly balls website
I used this Incubator for years. The design is really simple. It wasn't the most attractive thing to have sitting in the house, but it got the job done.

A cooler setup is exactly the same as the mini fridge builds.
I suggested it because it sounds like you don't need it to hold more than one clutch.
This is Mykees diy. Just use a cooler (or an old mini fridge if you like)

i used a styrofoam chicken egg incubator for my chameleon clutches; you have to make some very minor modifications, but it was pretty effective for me, and should fit one clutch perfectly

Be sure if you go with a bird egg incubator it does not roll the eggs. Bird eggs need to be rolled occasionally but this is fatal to snake eggs. Some bird egg incubators have an auto roll feature. A no no for us.

that is correct. The one i purchased from TSC was very simple (about 20$) and was such that the egg rolling tray could just be removed, and then i put my eggs in a tupperware with sphagnum (they were too tiny for the grates). I imagine if you wanted to get really fancy you could hook a fan or something up to the egg rolling motor, but i just kept it turned off.

Wine cooler from craigslist with front opening window. Used and cheap.
Heat cable zigzagging the ceiling and sides.
A pool of water on the bottom of you want extra humidity.
Proportional thermostat.
The only thing thats really gonna cost you money is a proportional state if you don't have an extra lying around, so make sure you get a bigger whine cooler, it will make it worth the money and it will be much more accurate and alot of them come with fans to circulate air.
You could go the cheap route and fill a polystyrene bucket with water and an aquarium heater on a stat, and something to suspend your egg box above it but then you can't see the eggs and you get stale air. Also, heating from the bottom causes water droplets on the roofs of egg boxes which can be a problem.

Pretty much what everyone else said.
