Hi, everyone. I'm new here and was directed here from another forum I posted on looking for some information regarding two snakes I found under our outside dog's 5 gallon water bucket. They aren't native and I was told they are some sort of boa, or redtail on the other forum. I have them both set up in separate 34qt sterilite bins with 5 holes on each long side, half of the bin is sitting on 12" wide heat tape hooked up to a thermostat keeping it 95 under the paper towels and 88 above. I have a water dish more than large enough for each snake to get inside of and move around in on the cold side (which is around 75-78F) and a paper towel roll in each bin on the hot side for them to hide in until I get their hides ordered. I have a board with my husbands weight vest keeping the middle of the lid secure until I can get some locks. I'm going to be ordering the small hides from ReptileBasics, but what size food should I feed them? They are about the size of a jumbo sharpie around. Am I doing anything wrong? I set all this up really fast based on my small amount of knowledge I have on snakes. I was told I can wait until Wednesday to feed them as well, is that okay?
Bump. I'm guessing by the size you said, probably adult mice. You can wait. they should be fed every 2 weeks. ASAP I would get them in separate enclosures. Temps seem right to me, but I don't know much. Hopefully someone else give input. Look online at care sheets, my guess is that they are Columbian redtails, or common BCI. Do some research and good luck (pictures of the snakes and enclosure would help as well)

sounds like a reasonable setup to get started with, although it really depends what they are, before anyone can offer firm advice, got pics?
Probably no rush to feed them unless they are malnourished, most snakes will go a long time without food without any problems

You're lucky to have found those little beauties, and they're lucky, too! I would lower the hot side, though. 95F seems a bit high...unless they're sick? Cool side is 75-80F with an ambient of 80-85F and a 90F hot spot. If the hot spot is too hot, they may not use it. You can feed anything that is about the size of its widest girth. Or, if you have a way to weigh the little ones, you can feed them 10-15% of their body weight.

Too right! I wonder if it is true about the lies and changing usernames etc?
I would suggest before anyone else posts here they read the whole of the linked thread!

Well, I guess I was right about them being sick. I couldn't think of any other reason someone would have their hot spot so high. I just didn't catch it because I've heard of people just finding exotic reptiles outside, even during the winter. I'm not sure why they felt it was necessary to go through all of this, but everyone seems welcome and willing to help, so I hope OP sticks around.

An IP check will confirm if the user has two accounts. As for the snakes I hope they get the help it seems they (well at least one of them) need and that people don't rip into her unnecessarily and just offer the advice she needs (everybody makes mistakes after all).

Coming to a new place you would think they could start with a clean sheet and tell the truth tho.......... (assuming that finding them is in fact a lie)
Starting anywhere with a lie doesnt encourage much faith.....

I will help anyone here but two things upset me and change my tune quick ....people whondo not follow the advice given and liars. I deal with enough of both at work and only desire to keep them off this forum. Why are people like this ?

Woooow, why do people make up stories like this?
I own a gaming forum and we had a gal on there actually stage her own death, and it was very elaborate, why do people do this? I don't get it.

We have kind of already hijacked this thread already and Im sorry for that but basically because Im the owner of the site her boyfriend contacted me via PM and told me that he thought his GF <username witheld> was missing and could my site post something to try to find her, the story went on and eventually evolved to suspected murder. Me working in a Government position looked into it and found it to be a hoax.

In this case, yes. But I feel like some people do it just to hide themselves as well, their "real selfes"

Yeah...I saw that. I really hope the person isn't lying. Thinking about it...conveniently finding two red tail boas in your back yard is suspicious.

I find one of her posts very fishy(from the ball pythons forum).
My email has been hacked as well as my friend's. I'm almost positive this person has deleted all ways we would have to contact them or get access to names and such. I wanted to post on the BOI but I don't have the name/website and now no longer the email. Both Rocky and I are very fortunate that he still has all but what he paid for in his bank account and these snakes arrived alive. Hopefully this experience teaches him NOT to gift animals, even though I know he was just trying to do something nice, I would have preferred he approached me about it first and I could see if he'd order the snake after the enclosure was set up.
As far as the backyard breeder comment, I'm not sure if these snakes were bred irresponsibly or captive hatched.
Why would the breeder even send two snakes if he was going to hack anyways? He already had the money from them. Looks like a lose-lose situation for the breeder
At first she didn't want to tell members of ssnakess the breeder's name to protect him....and now she's saying that she doesn't even know the breeder's name nor does the person who paid for the snakes. Who does business with someone that doesn't even tell you their name?

I've been keeping quiet in this thread because of the response I got over on RTB for calling her out in the first place.... But this is one of the reasons I did, but didn't make known to the people at RTB because I was trying to keep it sort of nice, especially after some of the replies I got. I just dropped it, because a lot of what they said made sense.
The first thing that bothered me about her new post was that someone would lie about finding two exotic snakes that someone had "released/abandoned" in Louisiana (which is considered a "high risk" state for invasive snakes by many people outside the hobby), because it casts an unfair and untrue light on reptile keepers and perpetuates the myths about the reptile industry. A I explained on RTB, I recently read an article from Florida that specifically mentioned several big name forums. Whether we like it or not, we are being monitored by both animal rights groups and Florida law enforcement, and who knows who else.
I don't mind someone making a new account because they got off to a bad start, but these specific lies disturbed me. I don't see any benefit to them. And as someone pointed out on rtb, maybe I was wrong for exposing her, but it just didn't sit right with me. Just like the whole thing with the breeder hacking her email didn't sit right with me.
Her actual set-up isn't that bad (though there is lots of room for improvement), so I don't understand why she feels such a need to come up with these extravagant stories. We were all new keepers at one point, and I have made my fair share of mistakes. We all have.
If she is reading this, I would suggest she start again on whichever forum she chooses (and it may be against the terms and conditions here, I don't know). But this time not make any elaborate stories or lies. Just seek help because she needs it. If she has a question, ask it. We don't need an explanation of how she came by the snakes. And she is still posting on one forum, and I hope she continues, but drops the stories. Just get the help and advice she needs when starting out with snakes.
Again, maybe I was wrong to call her out, and I do regret doing it. I was annoyed and reacted pretty quickly, and that's never a good idea, regardless of the situation. And I'm very sorry if she feels that she can't use the forums anymore. That wasn't my intention at all.

There's nothing wrong about calling people out. It's nothing more but exposing the truth.

This is just so elaborate...I honestly don't see a point in all of it. As you said Shann, she seems to be doing a decent job and looked like she was willing to listen at first. I'm trying not to judge, but the more I read the more this poor girl is digging her own grave.

I have a hard time ever getting past the "liar" issue and this is "extreme lying" so it would be extremely hard to forget this.
Why would a person bother.....especially on the internet.
