So its the first reptile show of the year tomorrow. Any suggestions on what snake I should bring home?? Difficulty of care is not a problem as I'm a reptile keeper in a zoo and have tons of experience with some of the nastiest reptiles out there. I've worked with so many snakes that I don't know what to bring home. Nothing venomous, I have enough of that fun work

That's my fallback snake haha :) Was hoping for something a little more unique. Love peruvian rainbows but I've never seen them at a show.

Welcome!

I guess my question would be, what kind of snake do you have a set up ready for?

That's the trouble with shows, gives me a bad case of the wants. Lucky I didn't have the cage space for everything I liked or I would have been in big trouble!

My problem is that I actually have 2 set ups ready. One arboreal and one terrestrial. I was so undecided that i set up one of each lol. They can hold anything under 8ft. I would love to order online but I've had a bad experience with that before, so I won't buy anything I can't look at myself

I don't have a budget for an emerald tree boa either if that helps. So suggestion has to be under $400

Hello , I currently have 1 Bearded dragon , she was a rescue . have had her for 3 years now and she is doing Awesome ! have been learning as i go , lucky to have a great reptile vet in our very rural area in Vermont .

On that note ... someone on a facebook page brought up bio-active substrate and that discussion got me very interested to learn more . Is it something that would benefit my girl ? is it safe for her ? how would i go about getting started ? any and all info would be greatly appreciated

Would you be able to save up for an emerald tree boa? Some would be worth waiting a bit for(so you can save up and buy what you really want).

If not that, then how about a GTP or Carpet Python? Or amazon tree boa?

I like your suggestions. I may just wait for an emerald. Sucks that this ball python craze has dominated the market. Leaves little room for other species at reptile shows

Not only that but it shows you what kind of people are in this hobby. When the ball python morph craze dies down, they'll move onto other species and ruin them as well. Why can't people just be happy with a normal?

I agree 100% about the ball pythons. I like them and have one my self, but I just got back from a show in Charlotte, NC and it was 95% ball pythons. I saw only 2 carpets, no BRB's and no GTP's or ETB's. I can only look at so many spinner-cinnamon-stripe-butterball BP morphs.

I agree. There's too much emphasis on uniqueness in terms of morphs, not species diversity.

Yup, it's no longer about the animal. Just about a neat little stripe on it's back, or a certain color....etc. Takes away the real fascination from these exotic animals. They become like chickens at a farm whose only purpose is to produce eggs.

That's what I'm afraid will happen at the show here in NYC. Fingers crossed for some diversity though. Shows here are dominated by ball pythons, boa constrictor, and blood pythons

You got it right mikoh. There's probably going to be more ball pythons than people at this rate lol

I don't know if you're interested in colubrids, but I would look for the beauty snakes. They are on my must-have list as soon as I get out of college. Especially the cave dwellers, I think they are some of the most beautiful snakes on earth, and they are very active and display well!

I've only been to a 2 shows, a few years ago, but I think I remember seeing a few baby beauties around...

I don't really understand the appeal of ball pythons, morphs or otherwise, but sometimes I think that morphs of animals like corns can really help a person get over a fear of snakes... "a PINK snake!! It actually is kind of cute..." :D

You make a good point. Who can be scared of a snake that looks like a little pink worm lol and beauty snakes are awesome. I work with a couple of them at work. I would love a blue beauty or taiwan. I would love if I find a pair of spilotes pullatus
