Happy New year all!
Woke up this morning to a bright new hatchling and a freshly laid clutch of eggs. Woot! 2014 is off to a roaring start.

Check out those stripes! I've been holding back the babies with the heaviest banding for the last few years, looks like it's paying off.

I'm so jealous. I've still got a few months before I've got eggs. I hate the waiting game, but love every minute of it.

Wow, gorgeous. Will it maintain that banding into adulthood?

Very nice Ben! What % hatchrate are you getting with these guys if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks.
Their color certainly changes but they do retain some nice banding as adults.

Thanks again.
Well... I USED to get 100% most every time but uh...(cough)...I kinda neglected the last few clutches and had some issues with them drying out, totally my fault. This clutch that is hatching now started out as 10, one went bad straight out, then 3 dried up, leaving 6, the rest are piping/hatching now.
I do have 2 other clutches in the incubator as well. I plan on trying out the water suspension method with the next clutch I get, those guys offered me free tubs... should probably take em up on it.
Best.

Yea I would too haha. I guess if you were getting 100%, anything less isn't great, but when you compare to all the other dumerils breeders in the US...oh wait. From what I've heard the suspension works great with some species, not so great with others. Good luck!

Hi Ben, well done to you and the monitor parents, they have some beautiful kid/s!
I assume you do keep records of incubation methods and times, hatchling sizes etc, have you published the details, if yes, where?

Well, I did keep records for the first 10 years or so, I have a fairly extensive handwritten record book with all the nesting, clutch size, egg weights and sizes, length of incubation, weight and size of hatchlings etc for about 20 clutches. I lost count of the actual number of babies I've produced after 200.
I published some of it in the Reptiles March 2004 article I wrote with Mark Bayless, and wrote a chapter on captive breeding and dumerils for the last edition of Sprackland's "Giant Lizard" fiasco (Sorry Robert!)
But haven't published the straight data. My good friend Bob at Biawak has been after me to write it all up for several years now. Maybe I should.
I stopped throwing up much data anytime I posted about my successes with dumerils because it always devolved into an argument when I mention the diet I offer my animals. So now it's just "check out the cute babies!"
Speaking of which, all 6 are out now, looking good, I'll be moving them around tomorrow and will snap a few new pics to put up then.
Best.
Congratulations on your continued successs with these amazing monitors.
Awesome way to start the new year. :)

Beautiful! I hope one day in the not too distant future you do publish details of your success.
I bought Sprackland`s first Giant Lizards book, at the time I thought much of it was "questionable" to say the least.
Of all the scientsits I`ve contacted over the years he`s the only one who never responded, I`m so pleased I didn`t buy the second (and I hope he reads this)! :)

Thanks, I will certainly try to find the time to write up my experiences with the dums.
Spracklands first book is what got me interested in dumerils, so there's that.
Robert and Teri are good friends of mine, I even let them live at my house while Robert recovered from eye surgery. I'm proud of the chapter I wrote for the second edition I think it holds up, but the book overall is not good. I understand his reasons for writing it, but it does have some glaring issues. The pics of my Grays in there are nice tho :)
Best.

Congrats on the latest clutch Ben, they're beautiful. The adults too. It's great to see primarily WC species being produced in captivity.
