we're expecting 1-2 feet of snow tonight, i dont know if the power will go out (living in a new place so im not sure if the power goes out as easy as it did at my old home), and i dont think my fiance's parents have a generator..

so, what should i do if the power does go out? it didn't go out during hurricane sandy, so i dont think it will, but there's always a chance.

As long as your power doesn't go out for a day or longer I think you'll be fine and that your room temp doesn't get below 60.

Ive lost power already this winter here in Maryland, like kwhitlock said, your okay for a few days but what I did was wrap my enclosures in blankets.

Why would the power go out with only a bit of snow?
our house stayed above 60 for a solid day without power. Keep the doors closed.

I think American power grids aren't as well built for snow as Canadian ones are. We've lost power 2 times at my house, along with many power outages for a couple days 2 times now in Michigan. Trust me terra it don't take much!

Order the 40 hour heat packs from amazon or shipyourreptiles. You can use them like heat pads under tubs.

We lost power for 32 hours last winter, and what I did was bag up all the snakes, and move them to the warmest part of the house, which was the kitchen. I also had heat packs and hot water bottles to put in the enclosures if needed.

And to avoid this problem again, we had a generator installed this year, though I still have a supply of heatpacks on hand :)

thats a great idea, I think I have some heat packs left from hunting season..I will have to go drag them out just in case...

we have lost power before with just a few inches of snow, just depends on how heavy it is, and if there is also ice accumulation...doesn't take much to down wires, etc...

Not all areas are equipped the same, my area loses power all the time just from wind. Some houses are also old and by just keeping doors and windows closed isn't always as easy as it seems keeping the warmth up.

I was kidding. Of course places not used to a dumping of snow will not be equipped. I am sure your houses are not insulated like mine either.
A couple boxes of hot paws will keep you going a couple days.

I never understood why people who live in an area that is cold and the power goes out often do not have back up heat. You can have a wood stove, kerosine heater or gas heaters that do not use electric. I have two gas fire places that heat the entire house without using electric.

Food for thought...get a full tank of gas before it snows. If all else fails you can put your snakes in a running car with the heat on. Or drive them to where the power is on.

I have only seen the power off twice in my life during the winter. I can understand how people might be relaxed about having a contingency plan for winter.

I live in the mountains, and it doesn't happen often. We are planning on getting a generator now that we have heat dependent animals, we bought a camper this summer so it will come in handy for that too :) waiting for income tax return to pick one up...

Im in the mountains also and It only took one time before I bought a Generator, Its a staple.

It hasn't happened since I lived in this house (since 2005) so it wasn't a real big deal..(happens more during summer storms than anything)...but we had planned on getting one for the camper anyway, so now we will just make sure it is big enough that it can run essential things here, too...

A few years back we lost power for 9 days. And I live in a decent sized town with lots of people. Snow hit us in october when the trees had all their leaves, and millions lost power.

In cases like that, I would find an open petstore willing to babysit my animals and just drop em off. Or a friend with power. Luckily 5 years ago I didn't have any herps as I was just re-entering the hobby

Ditto, we had one day without power after an ice storm down here in the dfw area. Moved my snakes in den with the gas fireplace.

it's not my fault, lol. i dont own the house. i simply live here.
and when i get an apartment, it'll probably be electric as well.

You do own the animals. A kerosine heater is not that expensive and is portable.
