I've been lurking here for some time while researching a Dumeril's boa purchase. This has been the best forum I've encountered.

My previous experience with snakes was when I was a kid and teenager. I always had some garter or gopher snake in my possession as a kid, and as a teenager, I had ball pythons, a burmese python, a California Kingsnake, a bearded dragon, and 2 Nile monitors, which I all adored. I had to part with that lifestyle once I got married (no money, no space). Now that I'm older and established, the reptile gene has started expressing again.

I have an approximately 4-month-old Dumeril's boa. It went into a shed cycle right after it arrived, and wasn't eating live or F/T mice after shed. I tried a live rat pup, and she went to town. She's been downing rats regularly, and she ate her first F/T rat weaner yesterday without any hesitation. Awesome snake, easiest reptile I've ever owned. The sweetest and most docile pet I've ever had, even more so than a bearded dragon.

This is by far the best thing about Dums. I got my start in the hobby with Dums and they remain the cornerstone to my collection, including my signature snake, Black Betty.

Remember, they are slow growers so it will take quite some time before they reach their adult size, but they are fun at any size. :)

I couldn't agree more. Dumeril's Boas are in my opinion the most underrated snakes out there. Every time I have babies it makes me so happy because that means there are other people out there who will get to work with these amazing animals.

What kind of feeding schedule did you have for juveniles? I keep reading different things. I know the adults only need to eat every 2 weeks.

I usually bump them back to every other week once they start eating Mediums. Until then I feed them weekly.

I do the same with mine. Once they're on XL and up I go to every 3-4 weeks.

Does anybody feed their adult Dumeril's jumbo rats? The rat pups weren't even showing a noticeable lump in my snake. I went up to weaned rats, and while they leave a good-sized lump, it seems to disappear after 4-5 days. I just want to know if that's typical.

Popeye and Arwen both are on X Large rats. They both weigh 14 lbs. Black Betty is on XXX Large rats but she's exceptionally large at 24 lbs., so yeah when they get big enough, they can go on Jumbos.

my adult male also powers down jumbo rats. he is pretty much full grown at over 7'.

when i first got my female dumerils from craigslist the guy was feeding her MICE. i IMMEDIATELY switched her from mice to small rats
and now she is up to large rats with no problems. their growth seems so slow but when i look at the pictures of when i first got her it's actually shocking how much bigger she is in a year or so.

Thanks for the greetings and knowledge, everyone. That's good to read about the large rats because I've read on some sites that people were giving their adult Dumeril's small rabbits. I don't know where I'd find those. I was worried I would have to start breeding them. Rats are easy to find.

I'm happy with slow growth. It makes it easy to adapt to their needs, instead of having to get used to it in a year, like with some pythons.

Hello, my husband has a 7+' dumeril (we do not know her age). She is the calmest snake, but we can't pet her cause she will pee on you. Anyway we were feeding her a x-large to jumbo every other week. Come to find out that it is too much as she is getting plump. We were told to take her down to every 4 weeks unless she starts dramatically losing weight then every 3 weeks.
