Its been 3 weeks since Lithir's last meal... again. He went three weeks without eating before and then he took one mouse finally, after that he hasn't taken anything. Its been 3 more weeks since that mouse.

How long can a western hognose safely go without eating?

His temps are all right, but he stays on the cool side of his tank every time I check on him. Its been humid in the house lately. Very humid. Its so humid that all of our walls are wet and our bed stays wet. Would the humidity cause him not to eat or is it just because its cold outside?

Might be the cold. It has been 2 months since mine ate.

I finally got him to eat the night before last. I gave him a mouse that I had purchased from another person (not one of my mice that I breed). It really smelled horrible compared to my mice.. I'm not sure if the guy lied about how he kills them or what, but it did not smell pretty. I also picked out a much smaller mouse than what Lithir has been eating. It was a mouse that wasn't even weaned yet and he has been eating mice just past weaning age.

It makes me wonder if it was the strong smell or the size of the mouse that made him eat. I just know he was angry at the mice I was trying to feed him before (puffing up his "hood" and hissing at them).

I wouldn't worry about it. Mine has gone a month easy without eating. Just watch for weight loss. How long have you had your hognose?

My first year of owning one it scared the crap out of me. I was so worried it wasn't eating. I would keep trying to feed her and she would just hiss and head butt the mouse. lol I have had her now for about 2 years and I have noticed she goes off feed for some time during the cooler months.

Oh I love mine. I would get another in a heartbeat. She has such a little attitude. Hisses, hoods up, and head butts like crazy. The minute you get her out she is the sweetest little thing.

So would I. :) I really enjoy mine. So much personality in a little snake.

BHB rated them the most *gentle/calmest/least likely to bite* snake.. What do you guys think about that rating? Ive been thinking about getting one, all the posturing you guys describe sounds more like my pine :D

They are all bark and no bite. Mine has never tried to bite me. But she will hood up, hiss, and head-butt me, but has always been closed mouth.

What are their keeping requirements? Similar to other colubrids?

They are pretty hardy. I keep mine on fairly dry coconut husk. I will lightly mist to keep the dust down. hot side is about 80 deg and cold I keep around 70-75. It usually drops during the winter months. I rarely see her on the hot side. Just after feeding she will go on the hot side, but I am also not there 12 hours of the day.
