Been a minute since I've given an update pic of my MBK, Calypso.

Here she is. Almost a year old. Need to get a new weight on her.

I meant to pop in here ages ago. Leo has been doing really well and has shed for me about once every three months or so since I picked him up about this time last year!

When I got him I upgraded him to hoppers from fuzzies, he's been eating adult mice since about March. :D

Thanks Ziggster. I admit...kinda jumped into all the snakes like a cannon ball! 8 snakes in as many months! So done for a while lol.

And wow, Leo is gorgeous! Love those thayeri!

Shedding once every 3 months? Wow, all my snakes shed more often than that, not exactly regularly but about once a month. The wee baby thayeri pair are taking 2 pinkies every 5-6 days and one of them has shed twice since they arrived. They could take fuzzies but I prefer to feed 2 pinks instead to control the growing mouse population a bit more.
How big/old was he when you got him? My pair are '15 babies.

I picked him up from an old school teacher who had him roughly 2-2.5 years. He's a former class pet. My best guess is he's about 3-3.5.

Too many, Mink! You really need to send me one of those hognoses. :P

That said, anyone want Noodle? He's such a pain in the butt lately, haha. I had to peel a cardboard tube open yesterday to get him out so I could check him for burns (he dislodged his dang temp probe and the hot end was HOT) and it was a tail rattle and angry pee fest every moment after, haha.

Don't worry, I fixed the probe good this time, and he got to chill on my desk in a critter keeper until it was a safe temp in there.

He sounds like my new albino female hog. She reportedly would strike the glass if someone walked by, and when going into her tank she hoods up, hisses, strikes, and musks! Jooing that some regular, gentle handling will calm her down a bit. I have her right next to my bed so she has no place to hide! Mwahaha! (Except in her hide if course lol)

Let just say I'm the designated drawer opener snake grabber.

07-23-15, 05:48 AM
I believe that she's a traditional T- albino California king. We looked at lavenders but my daughter informed me that we were shopping for a princess snake and that required pink, thus disqualifying the darker red-eyed morph.

My daughter got Princess Snake as a hatchling. She fed her, put up with the snappyness, etc. She definitely wasn't a fan of musking, though. It took me a moment to catch on but my daughter would use a hook to get the snake out and immediately hand her off to me. I'd get musked on and she'd take her snake back while I cleaned up...

07-23-15, 11:44 AM
Lol smart daughter! How old was she when this all went on?

chairman
07-23-15, 05:57 PM
She was somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 y/o. I'm in for a world of trouble in a couple years... but luckily, for now, the only trouble she's trying to get in is finding a male kingsnake to pair with Princess. That and a lavender retic but that isn't happening any time soon.

toddnbecka
07-23-15, 11:48 PM
I haven't seen the lavender albino in person, but the cell phone pics looked similar to yours.
Just convince her to settle for a lavender albino "prince" to pair with her female...
Where are the pics of your snakes?

chairman
07-24-15, 07:11 AM
It is my understanding that breeding an albino with a hypermelanistic or chocolate may produce an all-white king so if she gets a male then I'm going to push her in that direction... because I like solid colored snakes.

As far as pic locations, I think that the answer is either a)on a homemade picture perch in my front yard or b)hosted on photobucket.

Eir has grown so much recently. Her growth has been really slow the past couple months and then suddenly picked up again. She gained 11g in 10 days! [As opposed to 11g in a month] I had this little thought in my head that I wanted her to get close to 80g by her first 'birthday'. I'm calling her birthday some day at the end of July since it's in the middle of the 1-2 month time frame I was given. Since she didn't really start to grow until she warmed up in January, I'm pretty proud of her. Here are some comparison pictures. Two of them are from September, when I got her, to yesterday. The one with the scale in it is Xmas time to yesterday. Look at that fatty! I might have to start add another day between feedings now.

It's even written on the side of his enclosure, haha. He's just been a butt for like, 6 months or so--angry tail rattling and yes, peeing, every time I handle him.

I miss my mellow hatchling. :P I should probably handle him more, not less, and see if he gets over himself.

Lefitte

Hahaha I remember reading that it was on his cage. I laughed so hard when I read that. You're the one who describes it as 'angry peeing' don't you? I use that term now haha.

Here's an update on my Eir. Roughly 90g, fresh shed, and currently taunting my cat as I type. He can't get to her cage so she goes up to the glass and looks at him and he paces and meows. I swear she does it on purpose as payback.

Eir's officially one year old. I've pushed back her feedings to once every 7 days, give or take one, from 5-6 days. She's a hopper garbage disposal.

That sounds awesome Doug!

A little update on Eir. She's been growing like a weed and is nearly 100g (a little over 90g). December of last year, she was only 15g so we've come a long way! A few days ago, while cleaning her cage out, she decided to fly out of her cage and down 3ft to the floor. I sort of panicked because all of thr cats are out and it was very easy to lose her in the spot she landed so I quickly dove to pick her up. Upon lifting her from the floor, my cat who had been sitting on the shelf below her, reached out and snagged her. She lost one scale and there was some swelling but I've been keeping a close eye on it and applying some silver solution. It's healing up nicely. Normally I lock the cats up, at least the ones who are interested in snakes, but since I had no intention of taking her out it came as a complete surprise. Lesson learned. I felt incredibly guilty though. Last thing I want is for any of these guys to get hurt!

She's been a wild one to handle lately. Peeing on me constantly and wiggling like crazy so I think I'll take her out more. It's been more like once a week since I've been giving her some space to shed and I've been busy.

My Eir is about 16-17 months and 110g. She's getting touchy about winter again and is currently on a two-week feeding schedule. She's also getting more cream and chocolate than black and white like she was when I got her. People keep asking if she's a cross or banana, but I don't think she's either one. She was out and about a bunch today so I decided to take the opportunity to try to handle her and get a weight on her which I haven't done in weeks. She's 123g! Her last weigh was 108g. I'm not worried about her not eating but it IS frustrating. I've been offering every two weeks, and then one week after that if she refuses still. I've seriously cut down handling as it stresses her out. She pees, she flails, she tries to fly from my hands... I'd rather her just eat and sleep during the winter with a few minutes to weigh and look after her. Tonight she surprised me with the best handling session we've ever had, she nearly climbed into my hands and hardly flinched when I touched her. I think my plan is working.

The new guy, Cociyo. He is an Apricot Pueblan x Nelson's intergrade hatchling. With the exception of orange instead of yellow bands, he takes after his Nelson's parent. He is slender with narrow banding and a mellow disposition. Even straight out of the shipping box, he didn't bite or poop on me. He was a bit squiggly but quickly settled down. He's in a RUB until he gets big enough for a large display enclosure. I set it up with lots of hiding places and a couple of fake desert plants. He likes the cave on the warm side best, but he also likes going in and out of the buffalo skull hide. He's also been doing a lot of burrowing in the aspen bedding. It looks like a subway network in there.

Tonight we'll see if he will take a F/T large pinky for me.

He came from Reptiles by Mack. They call these crosses orange milk snakes. I hadn't bought from them before but the experience was good. He's a really nice little snake. I don't know if they all look like that - probably some of them take after the Pueblan parent. He came from their Reptique section, where the snake you see on the website is the actual individual you get. Usually you just order an orange milk snake, and you can ask if they have one that has certain markings, eats F/T, etc. They try to accommodate but you don"t know for sure what you've got until you open the box.

And boy, will he EVER take a F/T pinky. For a hatchling he sure strikes hard. It made a small thumping noise when he hit, and his enthusiastic feeding response startled me such that I almost dropped the tongs. He gulped the mouse down and looked hopefully at me for another.

I tried to lure him out of his cave to an area without shavings, but no sooner did I wave the pinky in front of his hide than his head shot out, he ripped the pinky off the tongs and dragged it back inside. By the time I lifted the lid only the little feet were sticking out of the corner of his mouth.

I've seen Mack's posts on fauna classifieds, don't usually pay too much attention though. Prices seem a bit steep compared to shows, but he does have some nice stock and apparently takes very good care of them. My everglades rat snake has that same feeding response. I just dangle them by the tail from my fingers, she hits hard but never misses or goes for the hand. As soon as the first one is down she's looking for another, and at her size she usually gets 2 or 3 depending on how big the mice are.

Well, it's been one year since I got carried away and got my second snake. Bee Bee is growing like a weed, she's almost 29 inches (when I got her she was 17), keeps the voracious appetite, very outgoing and enjoys to model for the cameras, making us all happy, lol.

Now she just doesn't seem to want to eat fuzzies or pinkies now. Keeping her in a 4 qt. tub with a ambient temp of 83.0f. I don't have any lampropeltis anymore, but I thought I would play in here as well. Some old pics that I dug up of just a few lampros that I had. Some hondurans and a black milk for good measure. I've also kept cali kings, floridas, speckled, easterns, and andean milks. I definitely love my hondurans and blacks the most out of what I kept as far as the lampros go.

I was actually wanting a MBK when we went to the show last year, even found a seller there with a good number of babies. Then Becka spotted these yellow thayeri, and had to have the pair. Since I hadn't planned on them I didn't have additional setups ready, so I skipped the MBK. The thayeri have been sharing a 20 gallon tank ever since they arrived. I just separate them at feeding time until they've both finished swallowing their rodents, and they get along just fine. I will be moving them into larger separate tubs sooner or later, but they seem content to cohab so far.

Nice kings TnB. How long have they been cohabitating? Other than for breeding purposes I didn't think kings should be kept together. Won't they eat each other?

toddnbecka
02-13-16, 01:03 AM
The breeder I got these from told me they'd be fine together. Thayeri aren't snake eaters like some species, they've been kept in the same tank since I brought them home last year. I've read (didn't reasearch them specifically before buying them, and didn't want to simply take the seller's word as gospel) that some kings are risky to pair up even for breeding, but other species aren't a problem and can be kept in pairs or even colonies year round.
The climacophora rat snakes were cohabbed for a couple months, then I noticed the female sort of twitching whenever the male came near, so I put her into her own tub. I've never seen any such behavior with the thayeri, they seem to generally ignore each other, though I have seen them both in the same hide a few times.

It takes time for bitey/flighty baby snakes to grow out of their evil ways. Though my female thayeri is still inclined to try to eat my finger if I reach in to pick her up, it's not a defensive strike. She just seems to think that anything pink is a mouse, regardless of relative size or scent.
The new milk snake is settling down quickly when handled, but the new baby bull snake is the best of the lot regarding ease of pickup and tolerance of handling. He doesn't even duck for cover when he sees the incoming hand, or even bluff and hiss. Does buzz the tail a wee bit, but that seems to be more from excitement than alarm, LOL.
Not saying you should get one or anything, just an observation...

Gah! Darn you and all your pretty black snakes! I wish mine hadn't been such a turd ;-; Maybe I'll find an adult one a d it will be better XD

You will find one :) I found Tyrion by accident, on the day I decided I wanted a Black kingsnake I just happen to stop in a pet store a friend of mine had and ta da! There was Tyrion :) I have to say he is by far my favorite snake. I didn't get him when he was tiny though so maybe that's why he was never nippy or flighty. I don't know but Tyrion is king ( oh I made a pun!) around here lol.

Ahhh all those MBKs are just gorgeous!

My little king girl has become the biggest brat. She'll be 2 years old soon and she's still flighty, very unpredictable, angry pees almost every time I hold her still, and she seems to be getting somewhat cage defensive. Today she hissed and struck towards me while I was simply cleaning her cage. Tried not to stress her out but after that I had to hold off a moment and wait for her to go run and hide again before very carefully sifting through aspen with my hand. Oi. She's a pain in the butt. Especially compared to my darling brb and polite hoggie. But, she is still quite beautiful. Her white is becoming yellow cream and her black is turning a chocolate almost lavender tinted color. I keep joking that she's going to end up looking hypo. She's 128g and 2.6 ft.

Close up of her color, hard to get an accurate shot and the yellow never shows.

But those markings though...

LOL why milks?

Why black milks? Hmm...well...they're the biggest, calmest, and easiest to care for as far as the lampropeltis go. They rarely musk even as fresh out of the egg hatchlings, and adults won't chew on your fingers randomly. Adults are a bit less secretive than some of the other subspecies as well so they make a nice display animal as well. Think of them as a laid back solid black giant honduran milksnake. Unfortunately that's all they have goin' for em, though. ;)

Not always the easiest to find, however.

I love the colors on your girl Lefitte. That's a nice suprise! I think it's really pretty the way the black has turned like a chocolate milk color.

Yeah, me too! I was hoping for a black and white snake but I really quite like her change. That's the perfect way to describe it, chocolate milk. It has this milky wash over it. She was no where near shed when I took these pictures and the milky wash over her chocolate color makes photos really weird. I should take her out in the sun again sometime and see what I can get.

The attitude you describe is the main reason I've never been too tempted by a Cali king. I know some are less "difficult" than others, but with my luck I'd get a hardcore-for-life finger biter, lol. My female thayeri is bad enough, she seems to think fingers are food if I handle her when she's hungry. Since I moved the male into his own tub I don't have to separate them for feeding any longer. Should probably start tap-training her before she gets big enough to actually notice the bites.

Luckily enough, she's never actually bitten me yet. It seems to be headed in that direction though and she's started making me a bit nervous. She wasn't so bad before winter but when winter comes she semi-brumates. She takes food but slows way, way down even with heat on. I live in California so it makes sense. Ever since she warmed up, she's been a giant brat. I'm determined to start holding her a couple times a week and see if it helps.

My MBK can be an opinionated critter, but not bitey in the least. Just inclined to angrily pee on you if you foil his plans to wander off somewhere he shouldn't. Sometimes he's content to just quietly chill in your hands, though.

Here's a couple pics of mine. He's a year old and so far has only latched onto my finger once. The cutest part was when he then tried to pull me into his cage to eat me in peace.
So far he's keeping his really stark black and white coloration, which I'm happy about. And I love that his banding is slightly whacky in a few places. I named him Cipher because I thought the dots and dashes were slightly reminiscent of morse code. And he has a happy face on the top of his head! I'm not sure why my pictures are being resized to be so small... but you can still kinda see it.

Albertagirl, LOOOVE that contrast! Mine has faded to cream and chocolate milk just this past year, starting with her nearly white turning to a light cream. Now some scales have bright yellow dots that are hard to see without looking super close. It's been interesting.

So, I've decided to try a snake hook when handling Eir. I've decided that I might have scared her pretty bad when she was younger since I used to do the bird catching technique of be quick so it stresses them less and there's less chance of them getting hurt. Not exactly the best way to deal with a baby snake, but she was my first. I've used the hook twice and both times were very positive. Not much, if any, pee and much less rattle tail. I also think she's afraid of the cats. She has been attacked once when she jumped out of her cage as I was spot cleaning so that's understandable. The only time she flailed when I held her last was when my cat jumped on the counter [oblivious to and ignoring her]. I'm going to try to keep them from her sight instead of just out of reach. I lock up the worst offender, the other cats don't care at all about the snakes and will typically listen to my commands and I never put her down when they're out so I can easily turn away from a cat or walk two steps to get away from them. But if the mere sight of a cat is making her nervous then I'll remove that factor when I handle her. The cats don't bother her in her cage at all [can't get to it].

Here's a new pic of her and a comparison. She'll be 2 years around the beginning of July.
