Just make sure to mist her enclosure after her eyes turn back clear. She should shed the next day or two after they do. Had mine 6 weeks and it's already shed 3 times. :D

Wow! I'll mist her when I get home tonight. She slithered through her water dish when I put her back but I'm sure that's not enough. According to her breeder, she last shed on the 10th of this month. She has had 2 feedings with me and I have had her about a full 2 weeks, going on 3 and this is the first sign I have seen of blue. Also, you can't see the blue eyes irl, it only shows up in the pics. Caught me by surprise lol.

I have a margarine tub filled with dampened spwhateveritscalled moss and my MBK LOVES it. He's in there all the damned time, even when not in shed. Haha.

I never bother to mist the rest of the enclosure and he sheds beautifully every time. Much easier to keep on top of--if you just cut a small hole in the top, it'll stay damp longer.

My king's been more active lately but I think that has to do with the added coverage I gave her instead of the weather.
Today was weighing day again. 21g, two days after feeding again. Last week she was 19g. Hoping to weigh her again before she eats again to check how her weight changes during the week.
What's the best day to weigh in the feeding cycle? What day to you weigh on?

I usually weigh before I feed which right now is about every 3-4 days. When I got my MBK she was 19g, then after her first meal she was 22g, then after her 2nd meal only 25g. She just got her 3rd meal so I'll have another weigh on Thursday . =)

Zigs- Yeah they can be little firecrackers for the first year or so.

Thank you both for the kind words! My adults come out of brumation in about 2 weeks. Wow, I can not believe how fast 2014 went by! It will be interesting to see how well my females do this year with fertility rates, clutch size, and extreme hypo ratios per clutch. I will keep you guys posted as the new season progresses!

Got my first bulk order of rats from rodent pro. I was gunna do big cheese but at the time when I ordered, they were out of what I needed :/ but I got what I wanted and I'm happy lol sure beats the prices at the store I was buying from.

I had my girl out today and got another weigh in on her. She finally shed the other day, too.
A whole 19g. It's been three days since she had three teeny tiny pinkies so I'll be feeding her again within the next two days. Trying to get her size up so that maybe, just maybe, she won't be afraid of fuzzies and we can move on to those. My LPS reopened so hopefully they get their mice in and I can pick and choose a little better! These Arctic Mice pinkies are just so, so small. My silly picky girl.

Her weight has been fluctuating quite a bit so I'm trying to weigh her the day before or the day of feeding. Last week, the day before feeding and on a completely empty stomach, she was 15g.

That's funny you mention but a black and white banded was not my first choice, an Aberrant was. :) But as you mentioned, same story with me. None available locally at all and all my other runner ups were too old locally. That left us with our banded Cali which I'm happy to say is such a great lil guy. Very very happy with him to say the least.

Thanks Ziggy! She gave me a surprise shed and it kinda broke up and stuck to her. But a warm bath had it come right off and I upped her humidity a bit by keeping the screen more covered. No issues since! ^_^ i think she's pretty before a shed because her belly gets pale gray and rainbowy! Lol

Update on Eir! We're making some progress! On 1-22 she was 19g so I bumped up her feedings. I've been having some issues with finding the right size food for her because she's afraid of fuzzies, insists that her food moves [she's getting better about that], and the only pinkies I could find were the smallest little things. I've been feeding her 3 every 4-5 days and recently I found that the pinkies Petco sells are a little bigger so I've been feeding 3 every 5-6 days. Today, she shed. Clean and whole, about 20" long. This is only her 4th shed with me. I've had her since September. Today she was the same as last week at 23g. Once my LPS gets in their stock [they just moved, part of my size issue], I'll try her on large pinkies to small fuzzies and see how she takes it. I'll be feeding her tonight after she has a break from handling/weighing. She's growing pretty consistently though!

I was told that she was 1-2 months old when I got her in September. Since I've been having feeding issues with her [more due to my inexperience than her], I think she's undersized so I'm trying to get a good rhythm and understanding going so that I can plump her back up to a better place.
She has grown quite a bit. I didn't have a scale back then but this is the day I got her in that same container:

She looks about as big as my King about 3-4 weeks ago. I havent weighed or measured his body but his last months shed was over 22". Up until last weekend, I have fed him 2 pinkies every feed for the past three feeds and last week he took his first fuzzy. I'd try that routine until she gets a bit bigger.

As far as not liking dead prey, I feed mine youthinized after he was fed nothing but live at the shop I got him at and he's been opportunistic with them. Ill dangle the feeder using feeding tongs and trigger his feed response. Once I have his attention Ill lure him to an open area in his terrarium and let him have at it, holding onto the mouse with the tongs until he gets a good coil around it. This way his response is triggered and he gets to stalk it. Might try giving that a shot as opposed to just tossing a lifeless feeder in and hoping she accepts it.

Yeah I'm doing 3 pinkies every feed. They're medium sized pinkies, not the super tiny ones I was forced to give her before or the large ones she prefers. She takes F/T just fine but prefers it to be moving a little. I either dangle it with tongs or set it down and wiggle it. She's been taking them after I wiggle it a little then leave it alone. She's been weird about the tongs lately. She actually grabbed hold of them last feed and scared me. She's done it before and it was fine, this time I jerked and felt bad. Hope it didn't hurt, but I was having issues with.. well.. disintegrating pinkies.. and glanced away then suddenly TUG. Note to self; don't ever put mice in the fridge then soak them in hot water before feeding. Bad idea. Try dunking instead ;-; (they defrosted on the way home)

Yeah, never thaw directly in water or attempt to microwave, thats just asking for a mess. What I do with my youthinized fuzzies is put them in a GladLock baggie when I get home and dunk them in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes to get their temp back up right before a feed. If I bought F/T, Id do the same thing. Just like thawing out a frozen steak or hamburger patty (great comparison). :). Give that a try next time, shouldnt be messy at all.

This is the face of a cranky pissbaby who wanted NOTHING to do with a post-shed once over. I had the towel out because...well, pissbaby. And we ended up on the floor because he continues to disdain gravity and tried to shoot out of my hands. Colubrids, man.

He's not been remotely keen on handling lately, to my dismay. I think perhaps it's just a winter thing? Nobody knows. Snakes.

I love the shots of the kids hold the snakes. Fear of snakes is definitely a learned behavior and while I did not keep snakes when my kids were small, I taught them about snakes that I found around the property we lived on and have a number of photos with them holding 4-6 foot long kings snakes and black racers that we released back into the wild as soon as they were done. Nice job raising the next generation of herpers!

Yeah they come in bags usually so I thaw them out in the bag in warm water then put them in hot water to warm them back up right before feeding. This was an unusual case. I think I'll start bringing an insulated bag with me because they won't make it home when its 120 outside in the summer.

This is the face of a cranky pissbaby who wanted NOTHING to do with a post-shed once over. I had the towel out because...well, pissbaby. And we ended up on the floor because he continues to disdain gravity and tried to shoot out of my hands. Colubrids, man.

He's not been remotely keen on handling lately, to my dismay. I think perhaps it's just a winter thing? Nobody knows. Snakes.

What a gorgeous MBK, cant wait to add one of those lil guys to the collection.

I'd always wanted a king, but got scared away by talks about how feisty they can be. Turns out mine is pretty chill, rattlesnake tail displays or no. All bluff and no bite, that one.

Update on my little girl Eir. She should be 7-8 months now and I still feel like she's behind but I'm really happy about the improvements were making. I took her out for a weigh in and a full tank cleaning today and of course she's in blue the day I wanted to do some handling and pictures haha. I've never seen her eyes when in blue so it was pretty nifty.

She's 36g today! It's only been a little over 24 hours since her last feeding so you have to take that into account, but I'm still estimating her weight at 30g or so. As a reference, she was 19g in mid-January.

Her shed is also perfectly on time, I was expecting it around mid-March which is exactly a month from her last one.

And just for fun, a couple photos for reference. Eir when I first got her in September (1-2 mos) and Eir today (7-8 mos) Sorry about the blurry pics.

I'm trying to figure out what a typical cal king weighs by the end of the first year. What did your kings weigh on their first birthdays?

My girl finally decided to grow and what a change! She just ate her first real fuzzy two days ago so she's actually more like 34-35g empty but that's still nearly 20g gained in 4 months when before she wasn't gaining much at all. She's been steadily gaining at least a gram between feedings and I'm feeding her about every 5 days. So happy that she's finally taking fuzzies. I got her September 2, at 1-2mos old.

I just wish he'd learn about gravity, LOL. I've been handling my Russian Rat too much of late--she at least has some grasp of "hey, I could fall" and takes some measures not to. Noodle just decides to go somewhere and goes, regardless of if there's anything between here and there. My days of getting photos of him one handed might be over!

I always catch him, but if I'm not super subtle about it, he gets startled and cranky.

He's got to be near 100 grams by now. Still wee compared to an adult, but such a hefty little bugger when you realize my next largest snake is maybe 30 grams! I'm always impressed by how muscular he feels.

My Imperial Pueblan does that, we call it suicide snake. He will be sitting wrapped around my hand seemingly calm, and then all of sudden he freaks out and jumps for freedom. I try my best to catch him but it is so random I am not always successful. He seems to be dazed but alright when I am unsuccessful.

I don't remember if I've posted a picture of my striped flame Goini king, Salazaar, before but here he is again! He's not quite a year old yet I don't think. He eats like a champ and still hasn't lost his vivid colors

My girl Eir has been spending all her time growing and growing and growing recently. I had some issues with her not really eating this winter that I thought was just my inexperience but I think it was just her because we're doing great now. I'm getting ready to bump her up pretty soon and we just got on fuzzies.

I was getting pretty nervous that I must be doing something wrong but now that she's growing finally I've become a very confident reptile mom.

I think you're rolling now Lefitte :). Upping her prey size was a good move and your feeding schedule seems on point too. Rat pups are likely too large for her now. The pups on Big Cheese are 20-34g each. Their rat fuzzys are 10-19g. She should be able to handle the smaller rat fuzzys. You can also stick with the mouse fuzzys or try mouse hoppers. I'm sure she could smash two fuzzys. Some kings do very well on rats and/or mice. Mine definitely prefer mice but they will eat rats intermittently. If I give them rats too often they'll start refusing meals. Best wishes, keep up the good work, and keep the pics coming!

Oops looks like I got the rat sizes backwards haha. I might try doing two fuzzies after this next feeding. I want to get rid of the last two pinkies I have. I'm going to try some other options around here. I don't have the room to order online in bulk and the chain petstores are getting too pricey. I don't mind the price until I see what others are going for. I hear there's also a breeder in town who people in my area seem to recommend and I think I saw his smaller sizes at under a dollar each. I'm paying $2-3 per fuzzy right now and the chain stores don't have all the sizes I need. They go teeny pinky, small fuzzy, small mouse, adult mouse and that's about it. Thanks for the encouragement!

Yes! I finally snapped the perfect photo for this comparison shot. The left one was the first full body pic I got of her back in early September and the one on the right was from today, June 2. She moved up to large fuzzies last week, didn't think she could get that down, had to double check that the package said fuzzy. She's still at around 51g. How she has grown!

She was born on 08\13\2013. Be 3 in a few months.

We went to the Havre de Grace reptile show last Saturday, and I almost had the MBK I'd been hoping to find there. There was a vendor with a number of good-size babies, but while we were walking around Becka spotted some baby thayeri and had to have them. Guess the MBK will have to wait a bit longer, still in the process of building new enclosures for my DRMB's and won't have a good place for another setup until I finish that project. The Hamburg show is this Saturday, provided I don't have to work. (Maybe I could squeeze in a tub somewhere...)
The seller said they hadn't been fed for 10 days, so they wouldn't poop in their deli cups at the show. They both took 2 new pinkies a few hours after they arrived, then 2 more today after being photographed. Feeding response wasn't quite as strong, so I think they're caught up and will go on a weekly schedule now.
Female has some small black spots, mostly along the sides, easiest way to tell them apart:

SOMEONE was a pouty baby and didn't want to come out. He thought he was safe in there and was so sad to learn he was wrong.

We took a brief foray outside. He really wanted to go play in the grass, but it's overdue for a mow and he's still small enough I didn't want to let him. He got cranky and peed on me for my efforts at keeping him safe.

Then we went back inside, and he got cranky and peed on me for not letting him get behind the bookcase. There is no winning with Noodle these days!

He still has "petulant pissbaby" written on the side of his enclosure. That will not change anytime soon at this rate. :P

I'm not going to jump the gun. They already have a deposit (long story) but if I don't like the one they hold for me they will get another. I want a pure black MBK with a good attitude.

I for sure want an MBK from day 1 that pure black look was so cool and I wanted one.

I know the story, one of my male DRMB's is touchy. He'll let you take him out of the enclosure if you move slowly, but if he's allowed to roam (like around the water lines and various wires along the basement ceiling) he tends to drop a load of urates when I interfere with his aim. Never gets defensive of aggressive, just lets me know he's pissed, literally lol.

Was told from her previous owner that she was a mex mex, but others have said she looks like a gray-banded (or a gray-banded hybrid). Previous owner also said she was a nasty biter, which is completely incorrect (she hasn't bit, or even offered to bite since I got her), so not sure how much of what I was told can be relied on.

Interesting. Everyone I have talked to has pretty much agreed that she's a gray-banded hybrid, but they've never made any guesses as to what the other species is. Makes me even more curious as to what she really is.
